  • Small castle with large grounds. Located in the historic little town. Good local amenities. Great to visit if you are watching the Kynren performance. That is a must see.  more »

  • Beautiful grounds to walk dogs and enjoy a whole afternoon. Mr. Ruffer seams to be doing a lot for the town. PITY THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WITH IS SPOILED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT FOXES ARE TORN TO BITS BY HOUNDS IN THESE GROUNDS. No place in this day and age. Ban South Durham Hunt .
  • I first visited Auckland Castle a month and a half ago and returned again recently, having so enjoyed it. I was especially privileged to experience the overwhelming Janet Cardiff 40 Part Motet installation on both occasions. The building was beautiful and interesting, the exhibitions were superb, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the audio-visuals were outstanding. Highly recommended!
  • Expect big things. This is only the beginning, yet Auckland Castle has already hosted some fabulous displays, artworks, events... Thomas Tallis' 40 part motet was absolutely awesome. Cobwebs orchestra playing in the chapel is just one example of the way the castle supports local and grass roots talent. And the cafe is always a treat!
  • Interesting place with big development plans. We walked around ourselves and found the guides were knowledgeable and keen. Visited specifically for an exhibition. Car parking in the town not at the Castle.
  • First visit today and what a delight on this lovely sunny spring day. Park in the market square and wander through the arch to the castle and grounds. Well worth making the free guided tour at 1130am. Beautiful grounds and house, friendly helpful staff. Very nice food in the Library Cafe. Try the Weardale cheese buck rarebit with rhubarb chutney! Very nice coffee also. Not a huge place overall but somewhere pleasant to spend 2 or 3 hours.
