National Trust - Birmingham Back to Backs, Birmingham

(2,200+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
National Trust - Birmingham Back to Backs stands as the only surviving court of back-to-back houses in Birmingham. The style was popular in the city in the 19th century before most of the buildings were demolished through the 20th century. Today, take a guided tour through the courtyards and interiors of the preserved brick back-to-backs. Interiors feature furnishings from over a century ago and the sweet shop looks just like it did in the 1930s. Browse the shops for Birmingham-themed and nostalgia products and sit in on a workshop on how to make your own rag rug. You can only visit this site by guided tour, which you should book online beforehand. Our Birmingham trip itinerary planner makes visiting National Trust - Birmingham Back to Backs and other Birmingham attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Old enough to remember this method of 'social housing' and now realise how lucky most of us are not to live in such conditions. The set up covers at least 3 generations of living styles and very well ...  more »
  • These are the last remaining back to backs in Birmingham. Right in the heart of the city a few minutes walk from New Street Station. Really interesting. Not all National Trust properties are huge old ...  more »
  • Incredibly informative but don't even bother if you can't do stairs! You can only go around on a timed guided tour.... do book if you can. Very very interesting.  more »

  • A lot different than the usual National Trust places that we have visited , pre-booked timed tickets will be your best bet , but tickets are sometimes available if you turn up on speck. Although there is no car-parking at this attraction there are plenty of car-parks around here that are reasonably priced. Allow for at least 1.5 hours for the tour , some great stories , and interesting historical facts , nice to see how us working class lived during this period ... makes a nice change to looking at how the gentry lived it up. Note internal photography is not allowed
  • Fascinating piece of recent history, well dressed with artifacts and furnishings from the different eras the horses were used. You're by appointment only but we'll worth it as our guide brought the place to life. Lots of reasonably priced parking nearby despite the city centre location.
  • I went to a rag rug hooking class in one of the rooms there. Thoroughly enjoyable and made better by the historic setting.
  • Fascinating piece of history as a window to the past. Interesting tour given by someone obviously passionate about their role.
  • Interesting historic corner. Our guide was great, pointing out little details while giving a good overview of the history of the Back to Backs all the way through to the present day. The experience was even better when some of the people on the tour said that they used to live in back to backs and gave their own stories to supplement the tour. Beware if you aren't very good with stairs as you'll be up and down quite a few flights during the tour.
