Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

4.5
Museum of the Jewellery Quarter provides a guided tour around a time capsule of a jewelry workshop, where very little has changed since the early part of the last century. For over 80 years, Smith and Pepper produced jewelry from this workshop, which was founded in 1899. When the elderly couple retired in 1981, they simply locked the door. Everything was left as it was: tools on benches, overalls hanging on coat hooks, even cups of tea and jars of jam and Marmite. Demonstrations and stories will guide you through the 200-year history of ancient crafting skills that made Birmingham the center of the British jewelry industry. The Earth Riches gallery showcases jewelry made from a wide range of material found in the natural world, including whale tooth, coral, diamond, and platinum. Original jewelry created by local designers and jewelers is available to purchase from the museum shop. Take the guesswork out of planning a Birmingham vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • I visited the Museum twice, both with guided tour conducted by two different guides: a very passionate tone, the other more humorous tones. Both have told the story of the neighborhood, the building of the jewelry world. With lab demonstrations. Not to be missed!

  • A well set out museum, showing how craftsmen used to work and what life was like many years ago. Then browse the local jewellery shops nearby.  more »

  • Looked around the museum quickly before a Birmingham, Solihull & Sandwell Jazz Festival event started. It's an interesting but small museum that represents this interesting part of Birmingham well. The shop contains very nice souvenirs and a fab selection of sweeties that I could not resist. The performance was held in a small area leading to the cafe. Blue Silk were outstanding and the space intimate. Food was good and there was a small external seating area in which I sat and admired the old buildings that were formerly industrial.
  • We did the tour of Smith and Pepper's jewellery factory. This was brilliant it was like walking into a time capsule set in the 1980s . The guide was very informative and he was able to add lots of funny anecdotes.
  • Good exhibits, excellent, informative tour guide. The tour gives a very good feel for what the workplace was like, and insight into both the workers and the family that owned and ran it.
  • I needed to complete enviormental risk assessment for work. Staff were very friendly, accommodating and showed me around. Thank u!
  • Informative, entertaining guides. A really worthwhile place to visit.
