Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

4.5
Museum of the Jewellery Quarter provides a guided tour around a time capsule of a jewelry workshop, where very little has changed since the early part of the last century. For over 80 years, Smith and Pepper produced jewelry from this workshop, which was founded in 1899. When the elderly couple retired in 1981, they simply locked the door. Everything was left as it was: tools on benches, overalls hanging on coat hooks, even cups of tea and jars of jam and Marmite. Demonstrations and stories will guide you through the 200-year history of ancient crafting skills that made Birmingham the center of the British jewelry industry. The Earth Riches gallery showcases jewelry made from a wide range of material found in the natural world, including whale tooth, coral, diamond, and platinum. Original jewelry created by local designers and jewelers is available to purchase from the museum shop. Take the guesswork out of planning a Birmingham vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

  • On entering the old jewellery workshop it was like going back in time a 100 years. Although the old store stopped working in 1981, it is much older than that as not much was updated. The tour guide wa...  more »

  • Absolutely fantastic. The guides are wonderful and really bring the place alive with their story telling, and the museum itself a fascinating place to step into; like it's been frozen in time. If you're visiting Birmingham (or you live here and have never visited) this is an absolute must-see attraction. Book a tour around the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter and experience what it was like to work in the Smith and Pepper jewellery factory in 1899. The building remains exactly as it did since the day the factory closed for good, the workers tools left sprawled on the work benches with jewellery littering the shelves. The museum tells the story of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter, including a demonstration of jewellery making techniques, and a tour around the actual factory itself.
  • A great little museum. William the tour guide was excellent - very entertaining and interesting. An hour well spent. Lovely and warm as well, which is what you want in February. It was almost eerie to see the papers and machines how the last workers left them in the 80s. It really brought the era to life for me. Good selection of coasters in the gift shop.
  • Well organized museum. Tourguide William was great. Combination of history and practical showcasing made the tour enjoyable. Book tours in advance as they tend to be pretty busy during weekends. Cant book online on the day of the tour (they may fix this later). Nice museum shop on ground floor. Ability to walk around part of the museum while waiting for the tour and after.
  • Display area is quite small but interesting (although there was another floor we didn't get to). But the tour round the old factory was interesting, informative and entertaining and the guide was very knowledgeable and engaging.
  • I went on one of the guided tours and I really enjoyed it. The guide was amazing and I learned an incredible amount. The demonstration was very interesting and I really like how everything was in exactly the same place as it was in 1981.I would really recommend visiting this museum especially with children.
