Museum of the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham
(4.5/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Museum of the Jewellery Quarter provides a guided tour around a time capsule of a jewelry workshop, where very little has changed since the early part of the last century. For over 80 years, Smith and Pepper produced jewelry from this workshop, which was founded in 1899. When the elderly couple retired in 1981, they simply locked the door. Everything was left as it was: tools on benches, overalls hanging on coat hooks, even cups of tea and jars of jam and Marmite. Demonstrations and stories will guide you through the 200-year history of ancient crafting skills that made Birmingham the center of the British jewelry industry. The Earth Riches gallery showcases jewelry made from a wide range of material found in the natural world, including whale tooth, coral, diamond, and platinum. Original jewelry created by local designers and jewelers is available to purchase from the museum shop. • An excellent way to spend a half day out in Birmingham, or could easily be combined with a visit to the (equally good) Back to Backs. The Smith & Pepper factory tour is fascinating, and was led, by an...  more »
  • We visited this museum today and it was incredible. I have been in the manufacturing jewellery trade for over 20 years and seeing this perfectly preserved workshop as a museum was, for me, incredible....  more »
  • Excellent guided tour by Carl tells the story of not just this factory but of the whole jewellery quarter. A real hidden gem of a museum.

  • We love going here just to look in the gift shop at the displays of jewelry made by local Artisans. All of which is available to buy.
  • Excellent museum, friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable staff set in a fascinating area of the city.
  • Although we had never heard of this place my wife and I agreed to visit with friends and we are both delighted that we did. To call this place a museum is to limit the experience, it has been called a 'time capsule' and this is really true. Our guide was very knowledgeable and interesting and bought alive this unknown world. Truly a most interesting experience.
  • Visited this while on a trip round the jewellery quarter. It was a good look into the life of a jewellery workshop and the way items were made up until the 80's. The guide was very knowledgeable, well worth a visit.
  • Fantastic time capsule. So interesting. Very good tour guide. Loved the story and the tour. Thank you..
