  • I canoed here on a very hot afternoon in May and it's a lovely place to stop for lunch or a picnic. It's free to visit. Disabled/wheelchair access should be fine depending how far into the wrecks you fancy going (uneven ground, boggy when wet). Unusual to see the timbers and structures of old beached barges and cargo vessels protruding from the ground. Interesting bit of local history too. Always tranquil near water I find and here is no exception. Not that much for kids to do though except run around the wrecks and play hide and seek for a while. There's a decent pub close by and a fairly big car park next to the nearby swing bridge. Plenty of people around walking the canal towpath, cycling, canoeing and fishing so it clearly has a wide appeal. Given that it's really near to Berkeley, might be worth combining a visit here with one to Berkeley Castle.
  • It's an interesting visit if you are in the area especially if you are interested in history and/or boats. Lovely views across the estuary. You might be disappointed if you went a long way out of your way to see it though.
  • A fantastic day out and, thanks to Paul and the Friends of Purton, a great insight into the hidden history of the area and the countries maritime heritage. I will certainly be seeing the Severn Estuary in a new light.
  • Used the shipwrecks to take some photos for a friend's media project. Cool wrecks, no restrictions so you can climb over and into them etc. Amazing views of the river Severn, very photogenic.
  • Beautiful and very scenic. The canal itself is very well maintained and I'm impressed how the ship graveyard is kept up. Suggest to visit during sunny weather though as it can get muddy and windy. Spotted only one dog waste bin by the car park.
