Landmark Tourist Spot
The Big Fish also called the Bigfish is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness 10 metres long constructed in 1999 in Donegall Quay in Belfast, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House. The Big Fishs image appears on Belfast and Northern Ireland related tourism material.ConstructionThe outer skin of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. Material from Tudor times to present day newspaper headlines are included along with contributions from Belfast school children (including a soldier and an Ulster Fry). The Ulster Museum provided the primary source of historic images, while local schools/day centres located along the line of the River Farset were approached to provide drawings for the fish. Images were provided by Glenwood Primary School, St Comgalls and Everton Day Centres. The Big Fish contains a time capsule storing information/images/poetry on the City.CommissionThe work was commissioned to celebrate the regeneration of the River Lagan. The site is a significant landmark as it is the location of the confluence of the River Farset with the River Lagan (Belfast is named after the River Farset).

  • A very interesting sculpture located on a spot with a fine vista. The close up of it makes it more interesting.  more »
  • Large interesting sculpture near railway station - worth popping by to inspect properly, although can be seen when travelling on road. In nice location for a peaceful stop.  more »
  • Strange to see this huge blue fish along the road. Set on a walking area you can get right up to it. Different but not spectacular  more »

  • A VERY FAMOUS spot in Belfast - you need to walk past it once and have your photo taken! Links nicely to cross the river and to the Odyssey/Titanic Area - or back towards town for the Cathedral Quarter and City Centre. I would often use it as a taxi pick up spot on a night out :-) Also a very nice sculpture!!
  • Beautiful relaxing part of the city and not too far away from city hall. Nothing spectacular, just a big fish but a beautiful scenery to sit on a comfy bench and have a scroll through Facebook, take a little dander or take a few photos.
  • A lovely place by the river to hangout during the evening. Lots of fresh air and a nice ambience.......The Titanic Boat Tour is a must see.....
  • Interesting public art with lots of details in the "tiles" when you get up close.
  • It's a big fish! What's not to like! For PokemonGo players it's also worth mentioning that it's a pokestop! Check it out.
