Belfast Castle, Belfast

3.8
History and fine dining come together at Belfast Castle, which holds a prominent position 120 m (400 ft) above sea level and provides panoramic views of the city of Belfast and Belfast Lough. Dating back to 1870, the castle was designed in the Scottish baronial style by architect Charles Lanyon. One of the area’s most popular wedding reception venues, the castle includes a well-stocked antiques shop and an informative visitor center. The castle’s restaurant serves meals for all tastes, from light snacks to gourmet evening meals, prepared using only the freshest and finest local produce. When you visit the castle, don’t miss a chance to photograph the iconic Napoleon’s Nose, a basalt outcrop believed to have inspired Jonathan Swift’s novel "Gulliver's Travels." Things that have impact on the castle the castle itself was built in the traditional sandstone is great, but didn't. However, garden and distant views are worth a look. By the way, parking and admission is free.

It was fun to see the castle, but it would have been cool to have the opportunity to enter it. You only need about 15 minutes here to take pictures of the castle, garden and view.  more »

Very nice surroundings. Building of charming architecture. Breathtaking view of Belfast and as the sky was cloudy, it was possible to see the coast of Scotland

  • Not the most grand of castles, but beautiful gardens and free entrance. It also had a good view of the city below. I arrived early and there were no other visitors.
  • Really lovely and such a beautiful place! Ideal for everyone who wants to enjoy the magnificent view. Too bad our tour only let us stay 10 minutes and we didn't have the time to visit the castle from the inside.
  • The outside and the garden are nice. Beautiful view on the city. As the castle is now used as a function location, inside can be avoided
  • The castle is very nice and you can basically walk around the rooms without any restrictions. But even nicer is the castle cave trail (the green one, you'll know what i mean.)
  • Really enjoyed all our visits up here. Free into the grounds and around the castle grounds, Kids will love the gardens ( tell them to search for the cats - they are everywhere - seats, stone work & in the shrubs ) . Great views of all of the lough - there is a kids park just past the castle which charges £2.50 in , there are better free parks around for kids ( ie the Valley Leisure Centre ) but if your up at the castle, its fine. It is possibly better for older kids ( less to do for 2-4 year olds ), the climbing frame, etc are challenging. The castle is open 7 days a week - there is a tea shop in the basement. Nice for a tea & chill out for a few minutes. You can have a walk around part of the castle, while it is not well sign posted and you can be unsure where to go..just go for it :-) A popular wedding & event venue.
