The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa, Bath

4.3
#6 of 224 in Things to do in Bath
One of the best examples of Georgian architecture in the UK, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is a street of terraced houses laid out in a crescent shape. The stone facade retains all the original detail from the Georgian period and is a testament to that era's elegance. It is best viewed from the royal park adjacent to the building, where the entire crescent can be seen from the concave side. Most of the houses are offices or private residences, but a hotel and the Georgian House Museum on street level give a peek into what the rooms may have looked like when the buildings were first opened. • What does the Georgian architecture look like? For a french, the term evokes a priori not great thing, if there is no knowledge really put the time. A horse between the eighteenth and the nineteenth, to the time of the Kings George (I, II, III and IV), be for us, styles Louis XV, Louis XVI, Empire, restoration, and Louis-Philippe. The answer in image stands before you, here, with this "royal Crescent", a subtle and harmonious balance between columns, pilasters, cornices and decorative mouldings, something between the Greece and ancient Rome and a neo-palladien style. In short, the Roya Crescent is the sublime incarnation. A vast esplanade curved thirty symmetrically aligned houses and gardens behind the facades. The life ahead, as decorum, life for himself, behind this décor. side class, they are strong these English!

  • A friend was visiting Bath so after a bit of walking and chatting we popped in for coffee. Beautiful weather so we sat on the croquet lawn. Service was friendly and efficient, and the peace of the surroundings was lovely in a city so busy with tourists. Not a particularly cheap place for a drink, but sometimes it's worth paying just a little more to be somewhere so historic and charming.
  • Beautiful hotel. The best in Bath. Understated Georgian elegance and faultless service. Located close to the centre but far enough away to be peaceful and very quiet. A fabulous break.
  • Took my mum there for a birthday afternoon tea treat - she loved it! The staff were friendly and made her feel special. The food was great too, i was worried I would go home hungry... But I did't need breakfast the next day! Thanks
  • The location is fantastic, the rooms are very comfortable, spacious, and the little touches add up to make it a wonderful place to stay. The staff are amazing, ever so helpful, pleasant to talk to and always smiling.
  • A wonderful afternoon tea! Staff were friendly helpful and pleasant and the gardens were beautiful. Food served was a delight!
