Pulteney Bridge, Bath

4.4
#1 of 37 in Shopping in Bath
No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. • A beautiful building on the River Avon. Similar to the Ponte Vecchio, in Florence, in this there are also several shops and food premises. If we walk through Bath an obligatory visit.

  • Crossed the bridge before i realised I was on it! The area is beautful with the weir and other buildings. Stone step access by the bridge to the river for a great view.  more »

  • Great view! Across the Avon in Bath, England. This was built in late 1700s, and is unique in that it has shops/houses on both sides along the full length of the bridge. Constructed using the local sandstone, it has been rebuilt after flood damage in the 1800s
  • It's a beautiful bridge.Loved walking across it.The views are simply amazing. River Avon can be seen in all it's splendour. There are nice parks too around .One is a beautiful park but it's paid.
  • Nice looking old bridge, if you in bath worth a look don’t see bridges like this every day. Also worth a walk along river to, great photo opportunities.
  • Beautiful and unique. We were lucky enough to see the bridge from our hotel. More interesting view from the river.
  • A beautiful historical bridge with excellent shopping facilities and cafes, these all come together to enhance the atmosphere of this important part of the Bath's stunningly beautiful city.
