Pulteney Bridge, Bath

4.4
#1 of 33 in Shopping in Bath
No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. • Alongside the Royal Crescent and the Circus, this is a must on any sightseeing tour of Bath. The little shops are very quirky and individual and the view of the bridge and weir is much photographed.  more »
  • Nice bridge and good if your a movie fan as the bridge was filmed in les mis so great for a wander And a spot of lunch after. We visited during November so the Christmas market was on so very festive.  more »
  • What a truly unique bridge, in a beautiful setting. We loved the architecture of the structure. Bath has so much to offer, and is so easy to get around. It is definitely worth the visit.  more »

  • Such a unique Viaduct! I have never seen anything like this before in any part of the world that I have travelled in. It really gives one a sense of the power that water has! Not a place I would recommend to swim in! The bridge itself is basically a road with lots of little coffee and tea shops. Good for cream teas!
  • A 'must-see' sight in Bath; the only bridge in the world with a continuous run of shops along both sides (there are of course similar in Florence and Venice, but not the same). It's also a really good example of Bath as a 'theatre set' - take a moment to compare the beautiful public-facing side of the bridge with its rear - every expense spared!
  • Lovely bridge on the outside. Has shops on the bridge, which is part of its fame, but that does mean you don't notice you are on the bridge when you are on it! Some nice cafés with good views on bridge.
  • Bath's own little version of the Ponte Vecchio. Historic stone bridge over the river Avon close to the centre of the city. Lined with small interesting shops on each side.
  • In the style of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, this is a bridge lined on both sides with shops. The beauty of the bridge is seen from outside. The river path passes underneath for a romantic stroll in the evenings.
