Pulteney Bridge, Bath

4.4
#1 of 33 in Shopping in Bath
No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. • Alongside the Royal Crescent and the Circus, this is a must on any sightseeing tour of Bath. The little shops are very quirky and individual and the view of the bridge and weir is much photographed.  more »

  • What a truly unique bridge, in a beautiful setting. We loved the architecture of the structure. Bath has so much to offer, and is so easy to get around. It is definitely worth the visit.  more »

  • It seemed like a street and you would not know it was a bridge you were walking on because it was designed and constructed to accommodate a line of shops on both sides. A stone staircase at the east end leads down to the River Avon, the weir and park with more shops. Some white swans swimming along the river adds charm to the place.
  • This is a bridge over the Avon near by the famous parabolic weir. Unless you take a view from the riverside approach you would never realize that it is a bridge. From the roadway it is just a street lined with cute little shops (on the bridge)
  • Nice place in Bath and if you are on the bridge you won’t notice that this a bridge as there are shops on both sides. There is a little park on the east side with a few benches to enjoy the view.
  • A striking bridge over the River Avon, lined with shops like the Rialto in Venice. The best view of the bridge is from the Grand Parade in front of the Guildhall Market. The parabolic weir is also quite impressive
  • Lovely area. Look over the bridge down to river. Very pretty lovely place full of history.
