Pulteney Bridge, Bath

Bridge
No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. Put Pulteney Bridge and other Bath attractions into our Bath tourist route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • What a nice place! Very good for a walk in a historical place. Good views for gardens and riverside.  more »
  • After dinner we chose to walk over the bridge. Very pretty and well worth the visit. It was well lit showing clear steps in the water and the sound of running water is lovely  more »
  • This is a nice place to just watch the water flow over the wear, but I would suggest you return at night when it's all lit up, it truly stunning.  more »

  • A must see sight in Bath. The only bridge in the world with a continuous run of shops along both sides. And a good example too of Bath as a 'theatre set' - take a moment to compare the beautiful public-facing side with the rear. That's efficiency!
  • Nice place. And lovely walkway that goes down to the river. Great views from. The cafes
  • One of the quint essential Bath attractions. Beautiful architecture and if you want to sit down by the river there are places to sit and plenty of eateries should you want a drink or a bite to eat.
  • Absolutely loved the view it was beautiful. The Roman style architecture surrounding the view makes the view even better.
  • Not much to say, nice old bridge in very good conditions with some nice shop and cafes
