Pulteney Bridge, Bath

4.4
#1 of 31 in Shopping in Bath
No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. • Since none of us alive today would have experienced the old London Bridge, with shops across its entire span- this is a lovely little experience! Shops line the street on both sides across the bridge,...  more »
  • Didnt bring the bread and olives we ordered but still added to bill. Not a real apology and no recompense - more bothered about clearing tables. Food good though, so no criticism of chef.  more »
  • There is an air of Rialto on the banks of the Avon River, even if the tone, gray and blue, move away from Venetian colorful fantasy. Nonetheless, this very beautiful bridge that arches are raised by shops is not without allure. Beautiful views of the city and the banks.

  • Lovely bridge with a great deal of history... In the evening it is lite up giving it a wonderful glow which reflects across the river.
  • A must see sight in Bath. The only bridge in the world with a continuous run of shops along both sides. And a good example too of Bath as a 'theatre set' - take a moment to compare the beautiful public-facing side with the rear. That's efficiency!
  • It's a bridge that has shops on both sides so it doesn't look like a bridge when you are on it. Quite cool. For a bridge.
  • Nice place. And lovely walkway that goes down to the river. Great views from. The cafes
  • One of the quint essential Bath attractions. Beautiful architecture and if you want to sit down by the river there are places to sit and plenty of eateries should you want a drink or a bite to eat.
