Prior Park Landscape Gardens (NT), Bath

4.5
#2 of 16 in Parks in Bath
How often do you get to visit a garden designed by a poet? Prior Park Landscape Gardens (NT) offers that experience set in a valley of no small natural beauty with views of the city of Bath. Literally the prototype of the "English garden," it has influenced the design of other such gardens throughout Europe. Only a handful of Palladian bridges remain in the world, and you’ll find one of them here--you can even walk across it. Relax in the verdant grass surrounding a manmade lake, complete with a tea shed. Stroll the nearly 10 km (6.25 mi) skyline to gaze at the natural beauty and check out Iron Age and Roman-era constructions. Finish off your visit with a picnic at the park; you can snag a rug at the boat shop if you forgot your blanket. The gardens are well worth the effort in getting there. There's no parking, so you need to take a short bus ride from the city centre - or a long uphill walk. The view from the top of the gardens is b...  more »

  • Nice spot to soak up views of the city and escape to. No parking available other than disabled visitors - so good luck finding somewhere else locally that isn't permit only! Lots of wild garlic everywhere when we visited recently, NT were even giving out bags to customers along with recipe ideas so they could pick their own. Probably one I wouldn't return to after ticking off the list, though.
  • Stunning views of Bath, and a great place to stroll and relax. Prior House is now a school, so not open to the public, but the gardens are beautiful - planned in a natural style rather than formal. Incredible wild garlic everywhere in Spring.
  • Amazing views of Bath!! Get the number 2 bus up from town because it's quite a steep hill. Takes about an hour and a half to walk the full loop at a relaxed pace. Lots of places to stop for a picnic. Cute little cafe near the bottom of the garden serving snacks and drinks.
  • OK, lived near Bath since 2001 and never been here before. Who'd have thought such a nice quiet country estate would be within walking distance of Bath city centre?!! Catch the No 2 bus up the hill to save an uphill hike!
  • Great view but tickets are expensive considering you are going to the park! Staff at ticket box is rude and wanted to force us to buy tickets + make gift aid donation without even asking us!
