Prior Park Landscape Gardens (NT), Bath

4.5
#2 of 16 in Parks in Bath
How often do you get to visit a garden designed by a poet? Prior Park Landscape Gardens (NT) offers that experience set in a valley of no small natural beauty with views of the city of Bath. Literally the prototype of the "English garden," it has influenced the design of other such gardens throughout Europe. Only a handful of Palladian bridges remain in the world, and you’ll find one of them here--you can even walk across it. Relax in the verdant grass surrounding a manmade lake, complete with a tea shed. Stroll the nearly 10 km (6.25 mi) skyline to gaze at the natural beauty and check out Iron Age and Roman-era constructions. Finish off your visit with a picnic at the park; you can snag a rug at the boat shop if you forgot your blanket. • We really enjoyed the peace of this park and the landscape views. There are no pretty herbaceous borders but the reproduction of the 1700s landscape was excellent. The tea shed had drinks and cakes, we had taken sandwiches so we were all set for lunch. The bath skyline walk can be accessed from the park for the more energetic. Personally walking up and down the the hill and around the park was enough exercise for me 😊
  • A lovely place to visit for some peaceful walking. My husband and I went here when they opened at 10am and barely anyone was there. Halfway around the park there is a small tea room and toilet if you need a break. There's also a bus stop not far from the entry gate. You can get 2 for 1 entry with a voucher online if you travel by train.
  • It is a beautiful park but it is not free, £7 is very expensive. I didn't know the price until I got there but after 20 minutes walking uphill I didn't wanted to just go back so I paid to get in. I don't regret it but if I knew the price before I would probably not go. You can do the Skyline hiking path which is free an also nice.
  • The views are great and it is a peaceful park, however not really disabled friendly. As said by others disabled car park is available but both routes to the lower ponds are not safe unless assisted (steep gradients) on both sides and also stairs on one route. For strollers I'd advise to bring the big wheel jogging type. There is a walk route that leaves the park and catches views of Bath which is nice but steep for wheels and rocky. The bathroom facilities are very family friendly. (Not disabled myself)
  • Nice spot to soak up views of the city and escape to. No parking available other than disabled visitors - so good luck finding somewhere else locally that isn't permit only! Lots of wild garlic everywhere when we visited recently, NT were even giving out bags to customers along with recipe ideas so they could pick their own. Probably one I wouldn't return to after ticking off the list, though.
