Bantham Beach, Bantham

4.3
#20 of 33 in Beaches in Devon
Beach Nature / Park
Grab a surfboard and prepare to hang ten at Bantham Beach, considered by many to be one of the best beaches in Europe. The beach, with dunes carved by the river creating a classic beachbreak style surf that attracts a surfing crowd, is privately owned by the village. Waves range from 0.6 m (2 ft) to 3.7 m (12 ft), but the shallow sandy bay lends itself to swimming and paddling appropriate for the whole family. At low tide, the beach reveals shallow sandy pools and rock pools, particularly good for young visitors. The area is favorable at all tides with a sand seabed, a southwestern swell, and a northeasterly wind. Pets are allowed, and the surrounding landscape yields plenty of trails for exploring. So much to offer on this beach. Huge area. When the tide is out lots of little streams to make dams. Great surfing, life guards, little cafe truck and pizza truck. A great British beach. £6 to park yo...  more »

Fantastic dog-friendly beach. It's a bit of a tramp over the dunes to the dog-friendly portion but when you get there it makes it completely worth it! Situated alongside the river, the beach is a lot ...  more »

Absolutely log this beach, the dog area is massive and the water is crystal clear. It is a little sun trap surrounded by hills.  more »

  • A good staging post if you are walking the South West Coast path if you are using the 'two cars' technique. If you are walking through Bantham without stopping, then note the ferry restrictions below. The charge for a car in May 2017 was £3.50 for the day. Toilets at the back of the car park and mobile catering facilities available. There is a ferry to take you over to Bigbury and Burgh Island but it doesn't run on a Sunday and on other days the service is limited to a one hour window in the morning and the same in the afternoon. Good beach and really the only place to surf and bodyboard on the South Devon coast
  • This beach is absolutely stunning, a fantastic surfing location as well as starting point for great walks! The car park is huge (£5/day for cars) In the summer, the home of surf school and of course the famous Gastrobus which serves amazing food!!! Highly recommended! Lifeguards present during the summer months.
  • Amazing beach. Surf is good. Car Park is an absolute rip off. Wish it was national trust
  • The drive down is a bit scary, but when you get there it's amazing.
  • Nice beach but absolutely hellish single lane road with enough traffic that we spent hours stuck in traffic not moving both on arrival and when leaving. Unfortunately this situation makes it not worth visiting at busy holiday times and weekends unless you go loaded with loads of patience.
