National Trust Penrhyn Castle, Bangor

4.5
#1 of 15 in Museums in Gwynedd
The mammoth 19th-century neo-Norman National Trust Penrhyn Castle offers opulent furnishings inside and a spectacular natural setting outside. In the halls, see a 900 kg (1 ton) slate bed made for Queen Victoria, elaborate carvings, plasterwork, and mock-Norman furniture. The castle also has a large collection of paintings that you could spend hours gazing at. The restored kitchens are a hit with visitors, and the stable block contains two museums: one for industrial railways and another for model railways. Outside the buildings, be sure to explore the surrounding parkland, exotic tree and shrub collection, and enchanting Victorian walled garden. • Fantastic family day out. So much to see and do! The castle is absolutely stunning - spectacular on the outside and really interesting on the inside. The grounds were impressive with lots to see and do. We loved the train exhibition too. We had lunch in the castle cafe and we were pleased with the options available - everything we had was delicious and the prices were reasonable. We could easily spend another day there as we felt we only scratched the surface.
  • Another lovely national trust property set in some beautiful countryside. The castle is well preserved both inside and out. There are 2 cafes, some free to use toilets, and 2 small national trust shops. Parking is free to both national trust members and non members. However it is a small walk from the car park to the castle. But they do provide a mini bus shuttle should you need this. Overall a lovely place to come and wander round.
  • Who would have thought that you could be so rich that in the 1800 you would build your self a castle and railway! You can spend hours here. Loads to explore and see. The house is massive. And there is an entire wing dedicated to a collection of clocks!! 1000's of them! The train museum is also great fun. As you can stand in many of the trains. Highly recommend a visit.
  • Fantastic places. My family really enjoy visiting here. You can walk around the garden, which are very beautiful and if your into photography, the views are amazing. The castle is lovely and staff are very informative and knowledgeable about the former residents and the castle itself. My children love the railway museum and the little playground in woods but also enjoy seeing the inside of the castle.
  • Really beautiful building and unique buildings. Unfortunately when we visited parts of the castle were closed off for a film crew. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, as I've found in all National Trust properties. It's well worth a visit for a walk around the grounds alone.
