Culzean Castle and Country Park, Ayr

(4.4/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web)
With its majestic architecture, antique furnishings, immaculately kept gardens, and seaside location, Culzean Castle and Country Park serves as a fine example of 18th-century high living. The Marquess of Ailsa used to live here, and today you can freely explore the castle and its surrounding grounds. On your self-guided tour, take in views of the sea from the round drawing room and check out one of the world's largest collections of swords and pistols in the armory. Outside, view the stone grotto and fruit-filled greenhouses of the walled garden and stroll along 4.8 km (3 mi) of beach. The castle is one of Scotland's best places to watch bats, and you can also see a range of other wildlife along Happy Valley woodland trail. For a deeper look at the other historical buildings and sites dotting the grounds, sign up for a ranger-led tour. • Really stunning location and views over to arran and Ailsa Craig however the castle ish a bit disappointing as it's very restricted access inside. Nice coffee shop in the stables with lovely outdoor seating.
