Bealach na Ba Viewpoint, Applecross

Bealach na Bà is a winding, single track road through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. The historic mountain pass is engineered similarly to roads through the great mountain passes in the Alps, with very tight hairpin bends that switch back and forth up the hillside and gradients that approach 20%. It boasts the steepest ascent of any road climb in the UK, rising from sea level at Applecross to 626m, and is the third highest road in Scotland. The name is Scottish Gaelic for Pass of the Cattle, as it was historically used as a drovers' road. Bealach na Ba is pronounced Bee-al-uch nu Ba(h).The Bealach, as it is known for short, is unsuitable for learner drivers, large vehicles and motorhomes. Please use caution while travelling up and down the Bealach. The route is often impassible in winter.MediaThe road featured in several episodes of the television series Hamish Macbeth (much of which was filmed in nearby Plockton), which pictures it having a roadsign that indicates: "Narrow road - no more than three sheep abreast". The road was also featured in the 1953 film Laxdale Hall.

  • Narrow and steep road. Beautiful views of the coast and ocean from this road. the road itself is in very decent shape in the summer. However, it is tricky to find places to let cars pass. Two-way road...  more »
  • Cycled the Bealach na Ba as part of our trip by bike round the North Coast 500. Very very steep but worth it. If its windy I would suggest taking the detour.  more »

  • Some climb on the bike, and no picnic for car drivers either, but a proper world-class road-trip destination. Shocked I went my first 40 years of life not knowing this place existed...
  • Very high! At 2075ft you're afforded fantastic views. Can be cold though, so wrap up warm.
  • An incredible road through the mountains going towards Applecross. A road that is not suitable for vehicles bigger than a car because it's a single track road that winds it's way up steeply to the Bealach na Ba view point, where you can park and look at the most incredible view of Skye and the West of Scotland. Then the road winds down towards applecross. Fantastic! Not for the faint hearted:)
  • Really awesome road to visit. This observation point is a great place to be either when sunny or cloudy. Very nice scenery.
  • Stunning drive over the pass 2000ft above sea level and back down. Great views over the islands. Not for the faint hearted!
