Castle Stalker, Appin

(4.4/5 based on 160+ reviews on the web)
Castle Stalker is a four-story tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about mid-way between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer".In recent times, the castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.SettingThe island castle's picturesque appearance, with its bewitching island setting against a dramatic backdrop of mountains, has made it a favourite subject for postcards and calendars, and something of a cliché image of Scottish Highland scenery. Castle Stalker is entirely authentic; it is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses surviving in western Scotland. It forms part of the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of forty in Scotland.

  • Well, here it is! What else can be said? You have to see it! To get up close is a bit tricky...bike paths, etc. Views from the cafe above are nice but a bit far away.  more »
  • What a sight to see! We started our day off with this Castle. We parked behind the Inn and walked down to the viewing point. There was a sign with some helpful history. Great spot to visit.  more »
  • We parked up in the Jubilee Bridge car park on the road to Port Appin. The bridge allows easy access across the estuary affording fabulous views of the castle and Morvern and Lismore. An abundance of ...  more »

  • Definitely not the tour I was expecting but one of the most enjoyable tours I've ever done. This is a castle that was bought and restored by a wonderfully eccentric family. One of the sons in that family maintains it now and gives tours. He WILL quote Monty Python with you if you require that like we did.
  • What a view..the Loch looks huge..im thinking "ive seen this before, in a dream maybe but defo familiar",so I walk back to the lovely tea room for an expensive cappuccino and scone, and I Google Castle Stalker..Turned out it was in 1 of my fave films, Monty Python and the Holy Grail..I knew it looked familiar..Anyway it looks awesome inside too.
