Castle Stalker, Appin

Castle Stalker is a four-story tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about mid-way between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer".In recent times, the castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.SettingThe island castle's picturesque appearance, with its bewitching island setting against a dramatic backdrop of mountains, has made it a favourite subject for postcards and calendars, and something of a cliché image of Scottish Highland scenery. Castle Stalker is entirely authentic; it is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses surviving in western Scotland. It forms part of the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of forty in Scotland.

The castle itself is very nice, stands on a small island in the middle of the Lake in a very scenic. However, it is difficult to reach, even just for a decent picture, because there are no roads that we are approaching. If you want my advice do this: parked in the car park of the pub "The old Inn" (don't be too so no one will tell you anything) and head towards the path that runs right on a lake. If you want to get even closer, just ahead on the right is a beach which can be reached through a meadow.

Most people visit Castle Stalker View Cafe for a snack, meal, gift shop, restrooms, etc. And there is a mowed path that leads to a great view looking down at the castle. You get good photos there, but...  more »

  • Enjoyed an excellent tour of Castle Stalker, I've passed by a few times and been desperate to visit so booked a tour on their website, not disappointed. The tour was conducted by a member of the owning family so he was very knowledgeable about the history and restoration of the castle, including it's role in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • If you drive past and don't book to be shown round Castle Stalker, you will regret it. One of the best afternoons I have ever spent in the highlands. It inspired me to write my current novel Girl in the Castle (published April 2017) although I have changed the name of the castle from Stalker to Castle Tearmanaire (meaning guardian/protector).
  • Wonderful scenery if you can work out how to get close to it, when you do it's a fantastic view
  • Lovely Drive from Glencoe to Oban stopped for coffee and photo's of The Castle great view's and scenery 👍👍
  • Great place to stop and llok at a wonderful castle and loch Tony
