Castle Stalker, Appin

Must see · Castle · Historic Site
Castle Stalker (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-storey tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe. It is about 1 1⁄2 miles (2.5 kilometres) north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about midway between Oban and Glen Coe. The islet is accessible (with difficulty) from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer". The island castle is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses to survive in western Scotland and is a Category A listed building. It stands in the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of forty such areas in Scotland.
In recent times, the castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

  • we saw this when driving down the road and had to pull up to have a better look this is something you have to see if your in this part of Scotland I had seen photos of this before But to see it in person is a lot better than seeing it in a book the views from were me and my wife had parked looking over to castle stalker were so beautiful
  • View is wonderful. Food at the official cafe rather tasteless... coffee was dreadful! But if you walk down to the wee beach section - you’ll catch a glimpse of how breathtaking this castle must have been in former times...
  • Great positioned castle. No access and no parking to view it. Made to feel unwelcome to even view it so moved on.
  • One of the most iconic castles in Scotland is a definite must see if you're in the area. Unfortunately I didn't check any tours in advance, so I only saw it from the shore. Parking was bit of an issue, but definitely worth seeing this castle and taking few pictures.
  • A beautiful place to sit and enjoy the amazing scenery
