Fast track but very flat so you'll only see that bit of the track you're standing by (unless you can see the big screens). We stood on the bank in front of the pit straight and that gave great views i... more »
We had a brilliant day at the Thruxton racing school yesterday, driving one of their Formula Renault Single Seater race cars, and hot lap rides in Porsches with instructors. They obviously do this a lot, because everything is run very professionally , and from start to finish the day is very slick. The staff all know exactly what their role is, and they work together as a team ensuring that customers have a very enjoyable experience. They were all very friendly and welcoming and treated everyone in a pleasant and professional manner. There is no hanging around or unnecessary waiting, and we enjoyed it so much we paid for extra laps on the day at the circuit. The circuit itself is in great condition, and is very clean and tidy and there are a couple of cafes around the pits/Paddock and chicane areas. There are raised viewing areas in the pits so you can watch your drivers getting into their cars and also a good view of them on the track .The race cars are very well prepared and the professional race car instructors make sure you will never forget your high speed hot laps as they take you round the fastest racing circuit in the UK. I grew up here so it will always be 5 stars to me. Incredible flying and racing experiences everyday. Exceptionally talented, knowledgeable and hilarious staff who clearly love what they do.
Went for a Lamborghini driving experience. Instruction etc was all fine but at times we were forgotten about compared to the more popular options. All in all a lot of fun
In short, fantastic day, great staff and instructors, just wish I could have had the option to drive one of the cars with the Traction Control system at least half off, if not fully off. I purchased a driving experience at Thruxton as an opportunity to test drive the Porsche Cayman and Jaguar F-Type V6S in a performance driving situation, before I consider test driving either car on the road. When I called up to book, I asked a few questions about the cars and I was able to reserve a Porsche Cayman with the PDK gearbox and was confirmed that the Jag F-Type they have currently is a V6S which is perfect for what I was looking for, so the admin/booking staff were very helpful. I’ve been to Thruxton 5 Years ago to drive a Lotus Exige when I was 17 and had just got my drivers licence and I was a little unsure how much the instructors let people push cars to their limits, as I was definitely encouraged to stay in high gears at low revs through corners when I drove the Lotus which is fair enough given my complete lack of experience at that time. I still had fun that day 5 Years ago, don’t get me wrong! Yesterday I had such a good day. If you can demonstrate to the instructors that you have listened in the briefing and can follow the correct racing lines round the circuit, the instructors are happy to let you drive pretty fast. If you can also demonstrate that you understand and can smoothly manage weight transfer and the attitude of the car in a performance driving situation, the instructors are also happy for you to progressively spend more time on the throttle, brake harder and corner faster. Yesterday was a damp day so grip levels were a bit tricky, but my instructors were happy to let me push the cars after a lap or two, so I ended up having a fantastic time. Driving the Jag F-Type was something I’ll remember for a long time - the exhaust note when you lift off the throttle on that V6S with the sports exhaust is utterly eargasmic. The whole driving experience was a lot of fun and I felt I learnt a lot about the performance characteristics of both the Cayman and the F-Type. However, my one gripe is that when I started to push a little harder in the Cayman, which my instructor was happy for me to do, I found the TCS highly intrusive. Going round Goodwood corner was frustrating as the car was subtly braking one wheel mid corner before the rear of the car would slide even a little bit, so the TCS fully on in that Cayman has zero tolerance for loss of grip. Josh the instructor said only he and the other instructors are allowed to drive the Caymans with the TCS off as there’s a £5000 excess on the insurance when they do, so I do understand why the TCS was on for me, but even Josh admitted the TCS was limiting how fast I could go. My experience in the F-Type was damn near perfect as the TCS in that car has a level of tolerance in it, so the system only stepped in once I think when I had genuinely started sliding a bit in Campbell corner, so I feel I really discovered how the F-Type behaves at the limit, and I know how the Cayman behaves close to the limit. So overall, I would highly recommend as I had so much fun and it is easily the fastest I’ve been able to drive on any driving experience in England. It was pretty close to perfect.
Great racetrack my only complaint is you can't get all the way round
