Browse through shelves of books at Barter Books, one of Europe's largest second-hand bookstores. Wander the aisles and flick through antique books, contemporary fiction, and everything in between. Make your selection in comfort while sitting in a cushy chair by the fire. Trade in old books for new ones, if you happen to bring them along. Enjoy the atmosphere of this shop, built inside an old Victorian railway station and its details, such as high arched windows and a model training running above the stacks. With our international travel planner, Alnwick attractions like Barter Books can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Fantastic second hand book shop inside a converted railway station. Huge selection of both fiction and non-fiction with plenty of collectable first editions if that's your thing. With a great cafe serving freshly prepared hot and cold food too, a book lover could happily spend a whole day here!
  • OH MY GOD. If we hadn't been in search of a quick cup of tea somewhere, we would have never found Barter Books, and I never would have realized my dream of just living there. Do you like books? Do you like trains? Do you like ginormous bookstores built within the walls of old train stations?! Well, you do now, because Barter Books is all of the above, with all the charm that goes along with it--a mini train set running atop the bookshelves, fantastical decor with written word hanging above, SO MANY BOOKS, even a cafe with solid fare. What a find--if only it was closer to Edinburgh so I could live & breathe the place!!
  • Nice place with lovely food and great collection of books: though certain members of staff can be extremely rude and prejudice toward youth!
  • A sanctuary for book lovers and a treasure trove of unique and inspiring books. In addition an excellent cafe with blazing fires and tasty food make this a half-day experience, at least!
  • Books of all genres. Cosy reading spaces, good coffee and friendly staff. Old fashioned feel. Like the fact that you can browse uninterrupted and let the dog doze by the roaring fire. Nice one.
