Barter Books, Alnwick

(4.7/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
Browse through shelves of books at Barter Books, one of Europe's largest second-hand bookstores. Wander the aisles and flick through antique books, contemporary fiction, and everything in between. Make your selection in comfort while sitting in a cushy chair by the fire. Trade in old books for new ones, if you happen to bring them along. Enjoy the atmosphere of this shop, built inside an old Victorian railway station and its details, such as high arched windows and a model training running above the stacks. With our international travel planner, Alnwick attractions like Barter Books can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • If you're visiting Northumberland then you have to spend some time in Barter Books. There's nowhere else quite like this place - you'll be thoroughly charmed by its rich history and quirky atmosphere. The cafe is also top notch! I go to Barter Books almost every week as a local and whenever I have friends visiting it's always one of the first places they want to go.
  • I wish the buffet had vegan options! The shop is wonderful, we were there all day. We browsed, read, and of course bought lots of books. It was a fantastic day in the shop except for one small thing - virtually NO vegan options on the menu. All the cakes had dairy and eggs, and the only option was a nakd bar, and if I have to eat another nakd bar while my companion enjoys a cake, I think I'll cry! It's not too hard to make a flapjack with vegetable fat instead of butter, so please help a book loving vegan out :-) The only savoury food available for a vegan was jacket potatoes or chips - pretty standard. It's not too hard to do a hummus wrap or fajitas with salad...
  • This is actually the coolest book shop I have ever been in. If you're in the area it's well worth a quick look in even if you aren't in the market for a book. We went to their cafe on the recommendation of a taxi driver and it did not disappoint. Everyone was very happy with their food and it might have been the best Mac and cheese I have ever had. Will say they are a bit light on their on their good vegetarian options but there is stuff available.
  • Wonderful place if you like second hand books and see the old train station. Definitely suggest to have a visit there!!
  • Spectacular second hand book store. A must visit. Set in an old station, the architecture, artwork and overhead model railway (!) of this place are enough to warrant a visit on their own. That's before you get to the thousands of books from all genres and time periods. Stop by for 10 mins and check your watch 2 hours later when you leave!
