Alnwick Castle, Alnwick

Built after the Norman conquest, Alnwick Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland. The current duke and his family reside there but occupy only a small portion of the castle. The rest is open to the public throughout the good weather months. A guided tour will illuminate the history inside the castle's walls, where the rooms are decorated in grand Italian style. There's no shortage of rooms to tour, as Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. The interior of the castle isn't the only attraction--the gardens are also a big draw. These formal, landscaped grounds surround a cascading fountain and, along with the castle, attract over 800,000 visitors a year. Alnwick lies at the North-East coast of England. The castle is directly on the coast, where the beaches here among the most beautiful in all over the UK. Alnwick itself is a small place, so how one imagines it. Typical old stone houses, the old pubs, etc. There are small shops that you can visit. Here, you can forget the time. The castle is even inhabited. The visit is worthwhile in any case and is an experience for young and old. Especially since Harry Potter was filmed here in part. Accordingly, you should necessarily complete the broom flying school. A lot of fun. Who then have time and interested in nature should visit Alnwicks gardens. The lady has created a paradise here. With all possible plants and Geächsen. She got even permission to grow drug crops such as cannabis. And don't forget to visit the tree house.

  • Visited Alnwick Castle today with husband and son. Was a fantastic experience it was. Had some really good activities to keep my four year old entertained. The main castle is ornate and steeped with history. The gardens were spectacular, the maze, the water features, the grounds, the main water feature and the little touches like the tractor for the kids. It was expensive to get in but it was worth it and you can visit again the tickets are valid for one year.
  • Very grand and picturesque Castle. Prices a little high to go inside and explore the grounds. Worth a visit if you plan to make a full day of it
  • As a castle experience, this must be one of the best in Europe. It's achingly beautiful and steeped in history. There's regular guided tours covering different aspects of the castle. The stateroom tour is particularly fascinating - there's a sense of grandeur but also reminders that it remains a family home.
  • Beautiful castle. Tickets can be validated for 12 months, which makes them a bargain. The tours, Historical Grounds, State Rooms and On Location, are all free and bring the historical and modern day castle to life.
  • Wonderful place for a visit of a traditional English castle. Guides and staff were phenomenally knowledgeable on the history of everything in the castle. All were really nice and open to questions. Fun for the whole family, just try to go on a sunny day to catch the outdoor events too... don't miss the great gardens either!!! Interesting to see a true working and lived in castle where "royalty" still live part of the time.
