Alnwick Castle, Alnwick

Must see · Castle · Tourist Spot
Built after the Norman conquest, Alnwick Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland. The current duke and his family reside there but occupy only a small portion of the castle. The rest is open to the public throughout the good weather months. A guided tour will illuminate the history inside the castle's walls, where the rooms are decorated in grand Italian style. There's no shortage of rooms to tour, as Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. The interior of the castle isn't the only attraction--the gardens are also a big draw. These formal, landscaped grounds surround a cascading fountain and, along with the castle, attract over 800,000 visitors a year. • We visited Alnwick Castle and booked ahead. We paid £8 each for a Castle and Grounds ticket only to find on arrival that this didn’t include the magnificent gardens or entry into the castle. The...  more »
  • Great afternoon at the castle with my girls in October half term. Booking procedure simple and easy to follow, staff all great and felt very safe.  more »
  • We had a lovely wander around the grounds in the sunshine. We had to book online in advance but there was plenty of tickets available including same day tickets. We thought £8 per adult was...  more »
  • Looked absolutely stunning from the outside and the town was nice to wander around but the castle didn't let dogs in. Not just the castle (which is fairly standard) but also the grounds which is a great shame. It also looked fairly pricey to get into but that's pretty standard with any national trust place.
  • Well worth a visit, lots to see and do. Has days with exhibitions on, we say one about Harry Potter's life. Good day had by all, worth visiting whilst it's dry though.
  • Well worth a combined visit ... castle and garden. Allow extra time to take in the history of the castle and its inhabitants, it is time well spent. Youngsters were kept amused looking for a soft toy in each room. Parking in Alnwick is tricky at peak times.
  • Really good. Great place. Beautiful. Only down side was that many of the free activities had been booked up by the time we got there which was only about 30 minutes after opening. Still had a great day.
  • Nice day out, lots to see. Castle itself very well looked after. Lots of free stuff on for kids and ya ticket is for the whole year cant complain
