Alnwick Castle, Alnwick
(4.3/5 based on 3,000+ reviews on the web)
Built after the Norman conquest, Alnwick Castle is the seat of the Duke of Northumberland. The current duke and his family reside there but occupy only a small portion of the castle. The rest is open to the public throughout the good weather months. A guided tour will illuminate the history inside the castle's walls, where the rooms are decorated in grand Italian style. There's no shortage of rooms to tour, as Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. The interior of the castle isn't the only attraction--the gardens are also a big draw. These formal, landscaped grounds surround a cascading fountain and, along with the castle, attract over 800,000 visitors a year. • Visiting in September, the weather was great, and the castle and grounds were beautiful. They have taken full advantage of being a Harry Potter set location and the kids love the broom stick training. The surrounding countryside is gorgeous and the castle itself is full of history. Unfortunately pictures inside are forbidden but it is well worth an hour or more to browse all of the interesting artifacts found within. I will be definitely coming back! Also the staff were all very friendly and genuinely seemed proud of the work they did.
  • Very interesting castle to visit with lots of character and history about the place. One can easily spend 90 to 120 minutes here, or perhaps longer, enjoying and admiring the features, architecture and scenery in and around the castle. You can park close by for free for the day but the price for a combo ticket for entrance to Alnwick castle and the gardens is £25.60 per adult so it's not exactly cheap. Nonetheless, both attractions make a nice day out whether with family, friends or alone.
  • Nice place. A bit on the Disney side due to the Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey ties. The children really enjoyed it. Castle and gardens very expensive and impossible to see all in one day. Would advise going to Bamburgh Castle for a more truly British experience.
  • Great day out.....take a change of clothes and towel for the children. Broomstick training great fun but get a free ticket for this as soon as you get there to get a time slot. Tour guides are good we did film location tour. Would of liked to see a little more Harry Potter events....but they were on different weeks.
  • Best castle in the UK. Had an incredible day out in here. It's a bit pricey but it's worth it. Many castles cost the same and don't offer half than Alnwick . I will definitely come back since I couldn't enter the gardens. No dogs allowed though. A pitty, my dog would have loved running in the fields. I loved the Dragon's Quest. They should emphasize more in Harry Potter stuff. Like a triwizard tournament maze or Hagrid's hut. Would recommend 100%.
