Duthie Park, Aberdeen

4.5
#3 of 34 in Parks in Aberdeen
Duthie Park, situated in Aberdeen, Scotland, by the banks of the River Dee, comprises 44acre of land given to the council in 1881 by Lady Elizabeth Duthie of Ruthrieston, in memory of her uncle and of her brother. She purchased the land for £30,000 from the estate of Arthurseat. The park is noted for the spectacular David Welch winter gardens with tropical and arid houses which contain the second largest collections of bromeliads and of giant cacti respectively in Great Britain (second to the Eden Project in Cornwall, England). Originally opened in 1899, the greenhouses had to be demolished and rebuilt after suffering storm damage in 1969. Today they are a tranquil place, containing such plants as tree ferns, Spanish moss, anthuria, and banana trees.Within the gardens are railings salvaged from the south side of the major bridge in the middle of the city's Union Street. These feature unusual metal cats, derived from the city coat of arms, and were saved when the side of the bridge was developed for retail units in the mid-20th century. In 2013 paddle boats were reintroduced to the park. Kayaks are regularly offered in the boating pond.Outside the winter garden is the Japanese garden, opened in 1987 to commemorate the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The park has undergone a £5 million pound refurbishment with funding provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Aberdeen City Council. The original 1883 plans were consulted in order to restore some of the long-lost features. Work was completed in 2013 and the official reopening was on 30 June 2013.

  • Duthie park is one of my most favourite places in Aberdeen. The grounds are well kept, the atmosphere is awesome. I love the stuff they occasionally do - opera in the park, tent fests etc. Only two big reasons why I haven't given five stars: there's very little lighting (only when you walk past the gardens building) and the access road is full of massive holes after winter, so I hope they fix it soon.
  • Wonderful park, recently renewed. Three great playparks for the kids, preserving the best of the old and combined with new quality equipment. Lovely areas for walking, boating, dogs, ballgames, even a bandstand and orienteering course! And the David Welch Winter Gardens are a highlight at any time of year - lovely plants beautifully laid out, and an escape from the weather. The newly refurbished cafe is tastefully done and serves a nice selection, and the brand new ice cream parlour overlooking the fish pond is fab! Don't forget to visit the terrapins too!
  • Beautifully renovated Victorian park in the center of Aberdeen. The winter gardens are well worth a visit. Excellent, recently renovated, coffee shop which has an amazing range of treats to choose from.
  • A nice place for family, includes places for children and a beautiful botanic garden. Right next it the park, is the beautiful banks of river Dee where you can a lovely walk after spending some time in the park.
  • The best park in Aberdeen. It is huge, with free parking. Many playgrounds, Pokémon gyms and Pokéstops. There is a huge conservatory or "winter garden" with many different temperature zones and varied plants which is free, most cities with smaller greenhouses charge for entry.
