Aberdeen Art Gallery, Aberdeen
Categories: Art Museums, Museums
Discover a fine collection of modern and pre-Raphaelite art at Aberdeen Art Gallery, the city’s main visual arts exhibition space. Designed by architect Alexander Marshall Mackenzie, the gallery opened in 1885. The building’s central hall features granite columns in a variety of colors, derived from different quarries in the surrounding area. The gallery hosts frequent temporary exhibitions and boasts an extensive permanent collection of paintings, sculptures, and graphics from the 15th century to the present day. The site also offers regular lunchtime concerts and talks, which are especially convenient for tourists with little time on their hands. The gallery has a busy schedule throughout the year, so be sure to check online for an accurate listing of upcoming events before you make the trip. This is a lovely old building that has recently been modernised. There is always an exhibition on & is one of the small number of things to do in Aberdeen.
This gallery displays many works of Henry Moore and many other contemprory artists. I was lucky to witness a performing art show presented by some local art students..
Aberdeen Art gallery was, unfortunately, being renovated when I went, so I'm sure it would have been a lot nicer if not for that. However, it was disappointingly small with not much range.
A nice collection but it is a shame they don't have a larger space. Not open Mondays!
The gallery is OK for a small town as Aberdeen but nothing special at all. It does not usually have any interesting exhibition on art just some ordinary and not high standard pieces but it is entertaining for an hour of so and...it is just Aberdeen you can't expect much!
This is a great gallery, lots of modern stuff downstairs, and more traditional stuff upstairs, so something for everyone. I was surprised at the quality and quantity of the pieces. The cafe was updated quite recently, and is good too. It's really kid friendly, they have boxes of toys in some of the upstairs room, which is magic. The google (from fromers) listed opening hours are wrong though, it is closed on Mondays.
Aberdeen Art Gallery (and the adjoining hall of remembrance) is well worth a visit. Apart from the art work the building itself has such a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
