Pripyat Amusement Park, Pripyat

#2 of 17 in Theme Parks in Ukraine
The Pripyat amusement park is an abandoned amusement park in Pripyat, Ukraine. It was to be opened for the first time on May 1, 1986, in time for the May Day celebrations, but these plans were scuttled on April 26, when the Chernobyl disaster occurred a few kilometers away. Several sources report that the park was opened for a short time on April 27 before the announcement to evacuate the city was made, although several others report that it never opened. In any case, the park—and its Ferris wheel in particular—have become a symbol of the Chernobyl disaster.AttractionsLocated north-west to the Palace of Culture in the center of the city, the park had five attractions: the iconic Ferris wheel, bumper cars, swing boats, paratrooper ride and a carnival shooting game.RadiationRadiation levels around the park vary; the liquidators washed radiation into the soil after the helicopters carrying radioactive materials used the grounds as a landing strip, so concreted areas are relatively safe. However, areas where moss has built up are dangerously high; some areas can emit 25 µSv/h, among the highest levels of radiation in the whole of Pripyat.Films, games and literatureThe park plays significant roles in the video games S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and the film Chernobyl Diaries.

If you ever wondered what the world would look like 30 years after a nuclear apocalypse, you should visit Pripyat. This overgrown amusement park with it's radiation hot-spots, derelict rides and crumb...  more »

Really the strongest experience from across Ukraine, the gradual rapprochement since the beginning of the zone to Pripyat is beginning to complete the story of something very strong. The whole tour I received an incredible amount of sensations that in me has done the final figure until the return trip. At this place I want to definitely return on a multi-day tour.

A surreal experience with a strong story. The place is a huge open-air Museum of tragedy. Who will have the path around, definitely a must visit.

  • Amazing place, a must visit if visiting Kiev. However upon returning my friends don't look at me the same way and call me weird. Could be something to do with the extra arm, leg and head I've grown. That's cool though, I'd go back in a heartbeat given the chance.
  • Beautiful place. Literally, it was as if the place was glowing with its beauty. As much as I loved the rides, my personal favorite part was the petting zoo. I loved the three-headed Deer.
  • Very good looking but all of the rides were out of order. Due time for maintenance! Lovely city. Truly proof of how communism succeeds where capitalism fails.
  • NO LINES, you can ride every ride here twice or even three times in just one day. Fun for the whole family. Bring your own snacks for when the snack bar is closed! It is closed from 12:00AM to 11:59PM every day until the dawn of the 27th Millennium. Facilities were a little dirty, but after I chased a family of raccoons out of the toilet it wasn't too bad. Also remember to bring sunscreen! We were told to use SPF 10,000, but we couldn't find it and went with SPF 50 instead, which worked fine. And did I say admission is FREE? You can just walk right in! Overall, great trip, definitely created a lot of fun family memories! Would highly recommend.
  • I've been to many an amusement park in my time and I have to say that the Pripyat Amusement park is in the top 3. Theread were many rides fit for the whole family, and many short lines, but you have read that in all the other reviews. I will go over what the other reviews don't. Nobody talks about the huge swimming pools with Glowing Green water. Why is that? Those pools do WONDERS for the skin. I did notice some skin peeling after a few hours but I have been assured that the events are separate. Speaking of water, the water in the hotel room must have been laced with Vodka because the hangover I got after drinking a lot of it was insane. Cookey Soviets! Last thing I want to say is the reason I gave it four stars. The amount of Deathclaws was insane. Go armed because EVERY time I would leave a building... DEATHCLA! Sometimes two or three! Other than that the park was, in the words of Donald Trump, Big Big, Goodo Good.
