Potemkin Steps, Odessa

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
3.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web
Odessa's best-known city landmark and symbol, Potemkin Steps also served as the site for a famous early film scene. The 1925 film "Battleship Potemkin" used the steps as the stage for a fictionalized massacre of civilians by Tsarist forces and a naval mutiny on a ship of the same name. You can walk the steps yourself along the seaward-facing entrance to town and see the optical illusion that makes it appear as a continuous staircase or a continuous landing from the bottom and top, respectively. Bring your camera; from the top of the stairs you can get a sweeping view over the bay and harbor. • Everyone has in mind the images of the film Eisenstein "The Battleship Potemkin" and the scenes that take place on the staircase. Too bad that the perspective towards the sea is completely obstructed by a monstrous building which would be hotel, but which is apparently abandoned. How could we imagine to such nonsense?
