Potemkin Steps, Odessa

(3.1/5 based on 700+ reviews on the web)
Odessa's best-known city landmark and symbol, Potemkin Steps also served as the site for a famous early film scene. The 1925 film "Battleship Potemkin" used the steps as the stage for a fictionalized massacre of civilians by Tsarist forces and a naval mutiny on a ship of the same name. You can walk the steps yourself along the seaward-facing entrance to town and see the optical illusion that makes it appear as a continuous staircase or a continuous landing from the bottom and top, respectively. Bring your camera; from the top of the stairs you can get a sweeping view over the bay and harbor. • Be advised, the steps are under repair and will be for a while. The Greek Gardens are also closed for repairs of the wall.  more »
  • During my visit, there was unfortunately no access. The stairs will be completely refurbished. There are probably longer works. Because it was renewed everything from below the top.
