Monument Tourist Spot
Duke de Richelieu monument stands dedicated to the city's first mayor appointed by Tsar Alexander І, who transformed Odessa from a sleepy village to the third-greatest city in the empire. In order to show appreciation for 11 years of service, the government and the city's residents built the monument for the French duke in 1826. Sitting at a square atop the Potemkin stairs, this statue serves as one of the city's symbols. At its base, you'll see bronze reliefs and coins from different periods of the empire. Pay attention to the cannonball that hit the structure once--it's now imbedded in the monument. The location offers unmatched views of the port and is also a famous meeting point. Put Duke de Richelieu monument on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Odessa holiday planner.
