Nikolaev Zoo, Mykolayiv

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Mykolayiv
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Nestled in a pristine green area, provides for about 2,800 animals representing 377 species, some of which are endangered. Dating back to 1901, the zoo started off as the private aquarium collection of the mayor. Over time, it grew into an institution with one of the richest varieties of animals in the country. In 2003, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums added it to their list, making it the first one in Ukraine to be internationally certified. Walk through the grounds and encounter wild and domestic animals of all kinds and sizes: you'll see tigers at play, observe hippopotamuses, and watch the monkeys. • Kids liked a lot this amazing place especially swimming polar bears and huge snakes :)
  • "Three Siberian #Tiger cubs destined for a zoo in war-torn #Syria have been rescued after being trapped in an unmarked, maggot-infested crate for a week. The #Tigers, which were being transported from #Ukraine, arrived at #Beirut airport in #Lebanon inside a tiny crate, where they could not stand or move and were forced to urinate and defecate on each other". THIS ZOO ABUSE ANIMALS.
  • It's nice place for a date, or family gathering. This zoo has a few cafe within the territory. But I've been to Zoo in Prague and in comparison with that one Mykolayiv Zoo animals look sad. I know the staff does what they can to keep it up, they have a few investors helping with food for animals.
  • I've been told this is one of the best zoos in Ukraine. Many different animals, but animals are not groomed and look like they are not fed well enough. Definitely worth going here is you have small kids.
  • Great place for a walk or a first date. Good for families with kids.
