Palanok Castle, Mukacheve

Sitting on a hilltop above town, Palanok Castle saw use by several royal families and was later transformed into a prison. Dating back to the 1300s, the site was once a powerful fortress; 164 canons protected it and a moat with a wooden wall ran around the estate. You can explore the castle's gardens and enter its old humid chambers on your own, or ask for a guided tour. You'll have a chance to visit the mysterious complex of underground tunnels that connect 130 rooms. On a tour, you'll hear many tales and legends about the site. There's also a small history museum at the castle. Using our custom trip planner, Mukacheve attractions like Palanok Castle can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

The price for the entrance is ridiculous, as you can not only enter the castle, but see many very interesting exhibitions. The only negative is that you do not find many descriptions in English, but s...  more »

Palanok Castle, incredibly beautiful, monumental, spectacular and historically interesting Castle, which don't just go and find yourself in the very atmosphere of the middle ages, and that only is 85 m. wells dug by hand through bedrock. Definitely recommend to visit.

  • Impressive castle location. It's builded on the hill nearby of Mukachevo city. There could take an amazing photos on castles terraces.
  • Nice place with amazing views... recommended for visiting. price 40 hrn ~ 2$
  • This castle is, without doubts, among the most interesting places in Ukraine. It seems to be always crowded above average — even when it is a cold and rainy autumn day, buses full of people still arrive to the bottom of the hill, each visitor complete with a plastic raincoat. After literally squeezing through the incredibly narrow crowded entrance, one will finally get inside the beautiful skeleton of a castle. Beautiful but not alive, it creates the impression of a fully gutted being, where seldom galleries, silly souvenir shops and soulless museum rooms just do not stick to the bare bones. One could pay for a guide, who will then lead the group through the stairs, enthusiastically telling a much simplified fairy-tale based on the castle's part in the humankind's game of thrones. The best way to visit this castle is not taking guides, taking your own tea or coffee with you, and staying for some minutes at high balconies of the castle, watching the dull town sceneries from the old walls while checking out corresponding Wikipedia articles.
  • Unique castle on the mountain. I recommend to take a guide for better experience and immersion in the history of the castle.
  • I'm from New York but originally was born in Mukachevo, immigrated when I was young. Had a chance to visit the castle in summer and winter. Both times had an excellent time. View of the city is great, also view of the Carpathian mountains. Plenty of history to learn while walking throughout the castle. Also I love Mukachevo because it's a small city and lots of cafes and restaurants where the food is always delicious. I've visited Mukachevo 3 times since 2015 and all the times I've been there for a month, never wanting to leave but of course had to return to NYC because of work...... Visit Mukachevo and the Polanok castle, you won't regret........
