Palanok Castle, Mukacheve

(4.6/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Sitting on a hilltop above town, Palanok Castle saw use by several royal families and was later transformed into a prison. Dating back to the 1300s, the site was once a powerful fortress; 164 canons protected it and a moat with a wooden wall ran around the estate. You can explore the castle's gardens and enter its old humid chambers on your own, or ask for a guided tour. You'll have a chance to visit the mysterious complex of underground tunnels that connect 130 rooms. On a tour, you'll hear many tales and legends about the site. There's also a small history museum at the castle. Using our custom trip planner, Mukacheve attractions like Palanok Castle can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Hence, a great view of the city. Yes, and the inside is interesting. There is something to see. Especially good night tour conducted by a monk with a torch.

  • Interesting castle with the nicest (wrought) trashcans I have ever seen. :) There's a café and quite a few souvenir shops. You can even rent a historical costume and take some selfies in the courtyard...  more »

  • Very nice castle. High on a mountain top of Muchacevo. Great overview over the city of Muchacevo. Parking space at the top at the castle is small. So better park earlier. Also there are some little shops at the castle.
  • interesting place worth to visit, at least who go up can have a amazing view to all the city
  • This historical monument is no comparison! The most beautiful view of the castle is at the entrance to the city from the Beregova.
  • Huge and beautiful castle with a couple of observation decks, which towers over the city. Lots of exhibits. Inscriptions in Ukrainian, English, and Hungarian.
  • Amazing castle I visited one morning.
