Medzhybizh Fortress, Medzhybizh

Medzhybizh Castle, built as a bulwark against Ottoman expansion in the 1540s, became one of the strongest fortresses of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in Podolia. It is situated at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Buzhenka rivers, in the town of Medzhybizh, Ukraine. Today the castle is part of the State Historical-Cultural Preserve.Originally the wooden castle was founded sometime in 1146 by Bolokh princes. The castle survived the Mongol's invastion, but in 1254 it was dismantled by Daniel of Galicia on the Mongol's orders as several other castles and fortresses in the Kingdom of Rus. The castle was rebuilt by Koriatovych princes after the Grand Duke of Lithuania defeated the Golden Horde at the Battle of Blue Waters in 1362.Its royal status the castle received already back in 1385, but in 1432 Medzhybizh with most of Podilia was passed to the Polish Crown. The castle was in a state possession for sometime. Sometimes in 1540 the castle was passed to Mikołaj Sieniawski who made some major renovations. The castle's founder was Mikołaj Sieniawski, and the Sieniawski family owned Medzhybizh until its extinction in the early 18th century. The stronghold was reconquered from the Turks in 1699 and passed to the Czartoryski family in 1731.

  • Very happy that museums are working on weekends and holidays. Came to 4:00 pm and for 2:00 all managed to show. Bought separately excursion (properly done all I advise) for 100 UAH. Guide for 45 minutes all told in the historical Museum, and further prepared we passed by all the attractions. Go restoration work. But around very nicely. Have enjoyed.

  • A beautiful castle with classical entertainment inside. The first mention of the castle dates back to the year 1146. Especially great entertainment no, but show-walk is quite cool. If you are coming to Khmelnitsky Waterpark from Vinnitsa, you can enter the path to the Castle. Of course be sure to visit lovers of fortifications

  • "Looked" show on the road from Khotyn. Powerfully, holistically, unfortunately running, but there is hope that the remodel. Honestly-not expecting to see the castle of this magnitude at the Khmelnitsky and yet rich in history: founded in the 12nd century in Kievan Rus; He was a member of the Galicia-Volyn principality; Vidal Duchy and It Pospolitu; experienced Korijatovichej, Tarnavskih, of Siniavskyi; reflect Tatar. I hope will and in the 21st century.

  • Walk around it for views, it won't be long, then get inside for some modest entry fee. The most interesting thing inside is the tower, which has newly-build, narrow and steep wooden stairs to the top. Three tiny museums can be of interest for those who are interested. Events like festivals are being held from time to time, creating an atmosphere if you want to believe it.
  • Looks good from far. Not much to see inside
  • Nice place, currently partially at reconstruction
  • Amazing place!
  • Beautiful historical place, great views
