Church of the Jesuits, Lviv

(4.9/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
The Jesuit Church in Lviv is dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul. When constructed in the 1610 and 1620s, it was one of the largest churches in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Sebastian Lachmius, a monk, based his design for the church on that of Il Gesu in Rome. His designs were modified by a professional Italian architect, Jacopo Briano, in 1618–1621.A curious addition to the original design was the 80-meter clocktower on the south side which used to be the tallest building in Galicia. The upper part of this early 18th-century tower was demolished in 1830.In 1740, the vaults were frescoed by Francis Eckstein and his son Sebastian from Brno. The paintings were greatly damaged during the Soviet period, when the church was used as a storage facility and suffered relative neglect.

  • The Church was built in Baroque style in the years 1610-1635, mainly at the expense of Elizabeth Sieniawskiej, wife of the Marshal of the Court the Crown Prokop Sinyavsky to the Jesuits. The original temple was the Roman Church of Il Gesù. The same assumption expressed by the construction of the Krakow Church of St. Peter and Paul in 1734 the Church partially burned down to over the next 13 years to be reborn. Tworcami gorgeous frescoes on the ceiling were Moravian painters Francis Ekstein and his son Sebastian. The author of the main altar was Sebastian Fesinger. On the pillars are numerous Baroque and Rococo tombs and epitaphs of the famous Lviv families: Dzieduszycki, Potocki and the famous Jesuit preacher Peter Complaints. After World War II, the Church was closed by the Soviet authorities and turned into a warehouse for books and magazines. After independence by Ukraine to the glass room by Simon mawer collection of another library, and neglected the Interior became the seat of the Greek temple of garrison. We were in the middle of the mass for the military. Raised the atmosphere, the traces of its former glory, beautiful ornament and gorgeous vocals all this has us at other times. Place that in Lviv please see necessarily.

  • An inspiring place to be. With a charming atmosphere - not like in any other church. Here you can freely walk and feel comfortable. Here many concerts take place and priests are pretty cool and modern...  more »
  • In the past year, as in this case, the Catholic Church is not completed. As I understood it, make it exclusively on funds from donations. The place is beautiful

  • Beautiful historic church. One to visit.
  • This is a lovely, quiet place, even with crowds. It's still under renovation, with scaffolding over the front altar. In winter the sunlight coming through the windows makes a terrific photo.
  • A recently reopened church so full of history.
  • Awesome!
  • Like this peaceful place.
