Church of the Jesuits, Lviv

4.9
The Jesuit Church in Lviv is dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul. When constructed in the 1610 and 1620s, it was one of the largest churches in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Sebastian Lachmius, a monk, based his design for the church on that of Il Gesu in Rome. His designs were modified by a professional Italian architect, Jacopo Briano, in 1618–1621.A curious addition to the original design was the 80-meter clocktower on the south side which used to be the tallest building in Galicia. The upper part of this early 18th-century tower was demolished in 1830.In 1740, the vaults were frescoed by Francis Eckstein and his son Sebastian from Brno. The paintings were greatly damaged during the Soviet period, when the church was used as a storage facility and suffered relative neglect.

  • Beautiful majestic Cathedral in the city centre. The inside is clean, you can login. The temple is a garrison, many materials and photos from the war with Donbass, everything makes a strong impression.

  • Church, beautiful architecture. By the way, inside the bed really-gray, as in the photo. This style, although quite nicely. And how modest from the outside the building, so this inside.

  • Fantastic building sacral, that there is no way to skip during walks. Often concerts are held in the Church. Definitely worth a visit and listen to-very good acoustics, sound system and execution;)

  • Gorgeous cathedral with breathtaking history. Built a long time ago by Jesuits (The Treasure of Nation with Nicolas Cage flashback), its interior was destroyed during the first and second world wars, and lately it was turned into the city archive by the Soviet government. Not that long time ago the cathedral was cleared from the books, including the ancient foliants, as the archive was removed to another, more appropriate building. Then, around 5 years ago, a complex ongoing process of total renovation has started. Now this cathedral looks better abd better, still holding inside a unique atmosphere. For now it is official cathedral of the Military Academy in Lviv, what gives this place a special halo of safety and hope.
  • Under restoration but it looks amazing. Beautiful architecture, emotional memories of war and soldiers... Must visit.
  • Currently under renovation. Stunning interiors.
  • Very nice old building. Amasing
