Golden Gate, Kyiv (Kiev)

4.0
Although no one passes through it any more, Golden Gate stands as the remaining historical gateway to an ancient fortress, representing one of the main landmarks of the city. Dating back to 1017, the 12 m (39 ft) tall structure served as an honorary entrance for the wealthy, city politicians, and ambassadors from abroad. Although severely damaged in Mongol attacks of 1240, the gate represented the city's gala entrance until the mid-18th century. Most of the ruined part was excavated in 1832 and reattached. Pay particular attention to the top of the monument--it houses the Church of the Annunciation. If you wish, you can visit the national museum within the gate. • Not so interesting as this has been rebuild and restored without really knowing what it looked like as an original building.  more »
  • The original gate itself was destroyed and they rebuilt it in a way to represent the first one, the place is small and be quickly toured.  more »
  • This church looking building definitely had our attention at night, as its design really came to life. During the day though, we felt like it was missing the night lights shinning on it. Mixed...  more »

  • This is famed in story and song, being the most beautiful gate of the early medieval city. The composer Modest Mussorgsky wrote a beautiful piece of music inspired by a picture of the gate, which was later arranged for a full orchestra by Ravel. The gate itself is a reconstruction, as the original gate is long destroyed. A statue of Yaroslav the Wise is beside the gate and the reconstructed gate gives some idea of what the outer walls and fortress of the city would have looked like in the Middle Ages before the Mongol Invasion. The Gate itself was not open to the public on weekdays during the winter, but even the exterior is very interesting to look at.
  • The most beautiful view is in the evening when illumination is turned on. In foggy weather it has a little mysterious view. You should read about this place before visiting. Very nice park around of Golden gates, it's small, but very cozy.
  • Only went round the outside - did not go inside. Great little park outside the gate to have a side and a Tea/Coffee. An impressive place when you walk around. It is also right out a Metro exit doors which is handy :)
  • If you are visiting Kyiv for the first time you should definitely come here. Very old and historical place, loots of small rooms and corridors to explore and experience architecture from 1017. Its 32 meters high, very beautiful with beautiful views of the city around it. Entrance is paid but not a lot, definitely worth the money you pay.
  • Very cool from outside and surrounding gardens. Was closed for winter so didn't get to see the inside. As you can see in my pictures, its far from winter conditions outside though.
