The Ukrainian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War, Kiev

4.6
#2 of 177 in Museums in Ukraine
One of Ukraine's most extensive exhibitions, The Ukrainian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War memorializes the Soviet Union's battle against Nazi Germany during World War II and displays a host of military artifacts. Visit the museum and explore its more than 300,000 exhibits dispersed throughout cavernous halls. You'll see weapons, documents, personal effects, and a wealth of other items from World War II. The museum's most famous symbol outside is hard to miss: a 62 m (203 ft) titanium "Motherland" statue depicting a woman with a sword and shield. Don't miss the outdoor exhibitions of military hardware, including armored personnel carriers, Cold War-era jets, and even some brightly painted tanks. • Fantastic museum with a huge amount of exhibits. There are a total of 15 rooms that have items on display from the second world war, including ground dug Battlefield relics and personal equipment donated by soldiers families. The entrance fee is very reasonable and each room has an information card in English that explains all about the exhibits on display in that particular part of the museum.
  • While there was limited English, each room had an English sheet describing the contents. Thoughtfully arranged and movingly presented. The exterior statuary was fantastic.
  • Amazing museum and an amazing experience going to the top of the statue! Really worth it. You have to climb up through one of the arms up to the shield. There's also a less daunting option for those who don't want to climb.
  • Cheap place to visit. Good variety of military vehicles and planes ( A few, you can get into for a tiny charge). The huge Rodina Mat 'Motherland' steel statue is something to see. Nice views across Kiev as well.
  • I was really surprised (hadn't read anything before) to see the size of the place. Funny that you had to pay fees also inside the area. The fees were minimal. I recommend this place to anyone interested in these types of places!
