St. Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev

4.7
#1 of 177 in Museums in Ukraine
Natural History Museum Religious Site
Although Soviet authorities demolished the medieval-era original before World War II, St. Sophia's Cathedral stands today reflecting much of its former glory. Deemed historically worthless by the Communist government and obliterated in 1936, the church was reconstructed by 2000 as a post-independence project of the Ukrainian government. Walk the cathedral grounds and marvel at the structure's array of golden domes and sky-blue paint. Admire the many depictions of its patron saint, the Archangel Michael, including the golden statue that sits high above the entrance. Be sure to visit the museum to see exhibitions displaying religious artifacts related to the cathedral and documenting its journey through history. • The site itself is just great! but if you want to visit it as a foreigner, take a lot of patiency with you. The lady at the cash desk does not speak any English, just not any. Even a sentence two adults, two students is just too far for her English knowledge, not to speak about the fact that extetion of ISIC card validity is something she has never heard of. And if you want to pay with a credit card (accepted there), I had to explain to her how to insert the card into the terminal... Even much worse is if you meet their English guide inside. While listening to the pre-recorded explanation of the model, she will come and switch it off. Without even bothering to say a simple sorry. When you make a complain, she will just explain to you that she is there so she has the right to do so, full stop. You can simply wait when she is gone or you can go yourself, take you choice. Such an arrogancy I have not seen for ages. But the site itself is worth of visiting, for sure, just take it as it is.....
  • The ancient, mysterious place. Indescribable architecture. Try to find 1000 years old graffiti messages on walls.
  • The cathedral's name comes from the 6th-century Hagia Sophia cathedral in Constantinople. Definitely worth visiting!
  • Very good environment and garden and the cathedral itself
  • An amazing piece of old Kyiv.
