St. Sophia's Cathedral, Kiev

(4.7/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web)
Although Soviet authorities demolished the medieval-era original before World War II, St. Sophia's Cathedral stands today reflecting much of its former glory. Deemed historically worthless by the Communist government and obliterated in 1936, the church was reconstructed by 2000 as a post-independence project of the Ukrainian government. Walk the cathedral grounds and marvel at the structure's array of golden domes and sky-blue paint. Admire the many depictions of its patron saint, the Archangel Michael, including the golden statue that sits high above the entrance. Be sure to visit the museum to see exhibitions displaying religious artifacts related to the cathedral and documenting its journey through history. • While in Kiev I met a co-worker who loved the history of his country. He was extremely knowledgeable and took my wife and I on a tour of the city and showed us the key historical sites. One of my favorite stops was the St. Sophia cathedral. It was built as the Orthodox version of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and, having been there as well, it was fun to explore and see the differences and similarities. The cathedral is no longer in use and has been turned into a museum. Please make this a priority if you are visiting Kiev. It is well worth the visit.
  • Such a beautiful church. Lots of details
  • Don't miss the opportunity to climb on the top of its bell-tower - breathtaking experience you will never forget! P. S. Don't touch the bells.
  • “The spiritual center of Kievan Rus`” Among the monuments that were preserved on the territory of Eastern Europe, the world-famous St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev is the most ancient. It was built as the main Church of Kievan Rus. I recommend coming here once you decide to visit Kiev.
  • Probably the the highlight of my trip! Standing on the balcony above the main floor, I had a sense of my own fragility and the agelessness of the church. Though it's filled with beautifully restored artwork, don't get caught trying to take photos inside; it's not allowed. The ladies governing this church keep a watchful on visitors and are quick to admonish picture takers.
