National Bank of Ukraine, Kiev

The National Bank of Ukraine building that is located in Kiev traces its roots to the State Bank of Russia that established its branch in Kiev, Russian Empire in 1860 after the local State Commercial Bank went bankrupt. The original building that once belonged to the local Noble Assembly by the end of the nineteenth century required major expansion. There were some propositions to preserve the original building, yet at the end it was decided to build a new building.

In 1900 the Petersburg State Bank and Sergei Witte initiated a competition for construction of a new building. The competition was won by the architect O. Kobolyev and work began several years later. The main facade was designed by O. Verbitskyi, who joined the project shortly after construction started. The Italian sculptor Emilio Sala was invited to create the interior decorations. The style is inspired by the palazzos of the Italian Renaissance.

On August 1, 1905, the building was completed and the bank's day-to-day business was transferred to it. The new building featured electrical lighting and ventilation and a central heating system.

  • Kiev is full of fine buildings. Sometimes you forget to look at the facades when you stroll around. This one you won't miss though. Interesting distinct Ukrainian take on Art Nouveau.  more »
  • Very nice building. Interestingly, next to the flag of the Ukrainian law on all such buildings hanging also flag of the European Union. Wonder why?!

  • Kiev center rich in buildings with quaint, a bit artsy, but stately architecture, notable example of which, incidentally, is the building of the National Bank of Ukraine on the instytutska Street. An impregnable fortress with curls in the Empire style with its monumentalism. What to say-beautiful, aesthetically, pleasing to the eye.

  • As one Zen master: "the most beautiful palaces of Kyoto early ever go away into nothingness: you could destroy them now!". Tin when people evaluate the architecture of the building façade. That there is much more important than the inside. Posredstvennejshaja job NBU-in a role of the Central Bank. If it were not for the economy, then the branches could be safely destroy this architectural masterpiece.

  • The National Bank of Ukraine building, built in the year 1905. Facade (originally 2 storey building)-authorship of architect Verbitsky. The building was constructed immediately to the Bank and had the most advanced at that time heating and ventilation system (using air from the glaciers and the rose garden). After 30 years was executed the reconstruction and overbuilt 2 floors. Inside is a typical Office floor plan
