Great Patriotic War Museum, Kiev

4.6
#2 of 340 in Museums in Ukraine
One of Ukraine's most extensive exhibitions, Great Patriotic War Museum memorializes the Soviet Union's battle against Nazi Germany during World War II and displays a host of military artifacts. Visit the museum and explore its more than 300,000 exhibits dispersed throughout cavernous halls. You'll see weapons, documents, personal effects, and a wealth of other items from World War II. The museum's most famous symbol outside is hard to miss: a 62 m (203 ft) titanium "Motherland" statue depicting a woman with a sword and shield. Don't miss the outdoor exhibitions of military hardware, including armored personnel carriers, Cold War-era jets, and even some brightly painted tanks. • It's ok. You get to see the motherland statue up close. They have different exhibitions which you pay separately to go and see. All are pretty cheap but some are not worth it at all and you can't tell from outside what they are like. Best part was paying to sit inside the apache helicopter.
  • Excellent museum with a lot of historic memorabilia. They have some written information and a tour offered in English. Definitely check it out!
  • Very informative museum well organised with English pamphlets in each room. They have life size photos and artefacts telling the story of the invasion as well as ruins of aircraft and armoured vehicles. There is also a hall dedicated to the fighting in Donbas region. I would recommend an audio guide or if possible a human guide.
  • Amazing range of artifacts. Very sad to see how the lives of people are impacted by some power hungry assholes.
  • Fantastic museum with a huge amount of exhibits. There are a total of 15 rooms that have items on display from the second world war, including ground dug battlefield relics, captured axis equipment and also personal items that have been donated by former Ukrainian soldiers themselves or by their families. The entrance fee is very reasonable and each room has an information card in English that explains all about the exhibits on display in that particular part of the museum.

This part of town also keeps you close to the metro and the central train station, providing quick links to the surrounding region.
