Dubno Castle, Dubno

4.0
#2 of 10 in Historic Sites in Rivne Oblast
Dubno Castle was founded in 1492 by Prince Konstantin Ostrogski on a promontory overlooking the Ikva River not far from the ancient Ruthenian fort of Dubno, Volhynia.

Ostrogski castle was rebuilt in stone in the early 16th century under the Polish rule when the city was part of the Kingdom of Poland. It had a church, a two-story palace, and an impressive array of 73 cannons. It was there that the treasury of the Ostrogski family was kept. These fabulous treasures brought the predatory Crimean Tatars to the castle on several occasions.

Prince Janusz Ostrogski, the last of his family, undertook major renovations of the castle in the early 17th century. He made use of the trace itallienne, or \"Italian style\" of fortification, to transform Dubno into the most advanced fort in the region. It is the only Volhynian castle featuring a hornwork. Prince Janusz's palace still stands in Dubno.

During the Khmelnytsky Uprising, the vicinity of Dubno Castle was the scene of heavy fighting between the Poles and the Cossacks, some of it described by Nikolai Gogol in the novella Taras Bulba.

  • Probably thanks to the Guide, even horror stories about ghosts and immured in the walls people were cheerful. Underground storeroom with dummy stores really liked children. The castle is well preserved and the outside courtyard and interiors are in need of restoration.

  • Interesting to make stop when on the way. Entrance 5 uah, 10 extra if you want to make pictures and 55 uah if you want to see expositions.
  • Great castle in the process of renovation, compact, interesting expositions, cheap
  • In comparison with the town's size, the castle is all right. Unfortunately, the observation deck was closed when we visited it (permanently?). In order to see everything that's open to the public, you have to pay the entrance fee of 55 UAH. Or, you may choose what you want to see and pay less. I've seen the torture exhibition only - nothing special.
  • Great place to see it
  • Could use some more English signs
