Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, St. Croix

4.7
#8 of 32 in Parks in St. Croix
Have some fun in the sun as you swim in the exceptionally clear water, or relax on pristine white sands, at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. The beach, which stretches for just over 3 km (2 mi), is surrounded by green vegetation. In the refuge, find the Aklis Archeological Site, which dates back to the year 400 CE. The beach turns into a sanctuary for leatherback sea turtles during the nesting season. Bring plenty of food, water, sunscreen, and even an umbrella; there are no nearby facilities and natural shade is minimal. • This beach is extraordinary. If you are on the island between October and March, this is a must see beach. During the summer you will not be able to go as it is turtle nesting season. To really get th...  more »

  • One of my favorite spots in St. Croix. Be sure to check the dates so you can plan a trip to watch the baby turtle eggs hatch. Protected area, be respectful of this beautiful place.
  • Beautiful park and beach! My wife and I hiked here from the Cruise Ship Terminal (only took about 45 minutes of walking leisurely to get there). It was overcast and rainy the day we were there but the water was clear and clean. Just watch out for the crabs 🦀😊👍
  • This is one of the best beaches on the island. Laid back and quiet as is a lot of the island. Lots of want until 50 ft out where there is a coral ridge about 30 feet deep. The water is so clear you can see tropical fish hiding in the coral. As a reformedb aquarist it was tough to watch thousands of dollars of coral fish flitting and schooling. If only we could take them home. Dive with a spear and kill any invasive lionfish. Watch the poison spikes
  • I was unfortunately unable to visit the NWR, but the beaches near the entrance were beautiful. I believe they are private so I wouldn't recommend a long stay or intrusion.
  • By far one of the most beautiful beaches. A must see while in STX. For calm blue waters drive straight all the way to the end to the last parking lot. If you want a little surf stop at the first parking lot ! Bring an umbrella as there's no shade and it gets quite hot.
