Carambola Tide Pools, St. Croix

4.3
#4 of 11 in Trails in U.S. Virgin Islands
Hike to Carambola Tide Pools along a rugged trail, where powerful waves hit the coastline and collect in naturally formed basins. An 8 km (5 mi) round trip, the hike is not for the faint hearted. Beginning with a steep descent into St Croix’s tropical rainforest and thick grassland plains, the route can often be hard to find, with no signage to help you. Make sure to bring a map or check the route with a guide before leaving. When you reach the coast, refresh yourself in the tidal pools and enjoy the wild, untouched scenery that stretches out to the horizon. It’s important to note that if conditions are rough, you should not enter the tidal pools. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen for the hike. • About a 45min hike each way in shaded trees is definitely worth it so the pay off of a quiet pebble beach and stunning tide pools. Not for young children but our tweens and teens enjoyed it.  more »

  • It is a very beautiful and serene place. The hike there is very narrow with lots of twists and turns but the end point is worth every step!
  • Choose a Nice Sunny Morning and hike the trail to get there. The pools are a bit overrated but the scenery in this area is Absolutely Beautiful. Go as early as you can cause it can get crowded. Yes,take some caution climbing the rocks but enjoy your steps and have fun.The Sounds and views are just marvelous!
  • Awesome experience, we hiked thru the rainforest with our six year old daughter... it was definitely a hike but we really enjoyed it... in the thicker parts of the rain forest the mosquitoes got thick. The pools themselves were to rough for us with a six year old but look amazing for what we could see, BUT the pebble beach was amazing to look at and listen too!
  • A great place to hike to for natures creations. Beautiful rock formation with natural pool. 2.7 mile hike from Carambola Beach Resort gate. Stop at gate ask guard where to park and where the trail head is. Bring plenty of water. Best to find out the tide and go at low tide. Enjoy!!!!!!
  • Super nice hike to get here, and a fun place to splash around for a while. We hiked on our own, though there are regular tours in and out from here. It was relatively unoccupied on our visit, though - we only saw a few small groups during the hour or two we spent down here.
