Island Monument
Explore the protected barrier reef at Buck Island Reef National Monument, a small island reserve around 2.4 km (1.5 mi) north of Saint Croix. The naturally abundant island and surrounding waters--3.6 sq km (1.4 sq mi) total--have enjoyed protection under U.S. law since 1961. An elkhorn coral barrier reef surrounds a large portion of the island, creating an ecosystem for a large variety of fish, reef sharks, and rays. Snorkel around the reef, following an underwater trail signposting the natural inhabitants of each section. Back on dry land, rest up on one of the pristine beaches and take a stroll along the main walking routes. • We took the 1/2 day snorkel trip and enjoyed it very much. It is sad the way the reef itself is so dead. There were quite a few fish, but not like pre global warming. The locals say the reef is coming...  more »
  • Much of the reef we viewed is dead and not a lot of reef fishes. Too much human traffic from snorkel tours. Best part of tour is the white sand beach at other end of island. Be sure to bring waterproo...  more »
  • Good to see once. Half day enough. We went of the full day but that is too much. There are better beaches. Better with a small group. The day we went was definitely not a beginner snorkel day. Piles o...  more »

  • Snorkeling here is phenomenal. Went on a full day sailing trip with Caribbean Sea Adventures and it was worth every penny. There is an overlook at the top, about a 45 minute hike but the view once you get there is rewarding.
  • What an amazing place. We went out with Tito and they were so nice and helpful. The scuba diving was amazing
  • One of the best excursions I have ever done anywhere! I would do it again in a heartbeat. Captain Carl was awesome!
  • Absolutely amazing . Snorkeling and seeing the different sizes and types of coral some inches from the surface. Seeing all the different kinds of fish, and comimg within 5ft of a 4+ft. Barracuda. Absolutely Breathtaking.
  • Gorgeous beach. Took big beards tour. Absolutely worth the money. We stopped at the beach first which was absolutely perfect. The reef snorkeling was pretty good. Sad to see so much dead coral though.
