Blackbeard’s Castle, Charlotte Amalie

(3.3/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Learn about the Caribbean's pirate-filled past at Blackbeard’s Castle, a lookout tower located on a historical site. Built in 1679, the tower reaches a height of 12 m (40 ft) and has walls 1.8m (6 ft) thick, allowing excellent visibility of, and protection of, incoming enemies. Nowadays, the top of the tower offers extensive views of the town and its harbor, while downstairs you'll find three sparkling swimming pools. Plunge into the water to relax after a long day spent plundering the high seas. Blackbeard's here too, in the form of a 4.2 m (14 ft) bronze statue. • Sightseeing in the historic part of Caroline Amalie starts here. The view is nice and the volunteer docents one encounters on the route is committed and friendly. And as a Dane can sagten be challenged if you went and thought that we were better than others ...

  • This was a very well organized self guided excursion. The gentleman that did the pirate and told the story of Blackbeard did a great job posing for pictures in front of the statue. The tower is an eas...  more »

  • Went here as part of a tour excursion on a cruise. Interesting. Not sure how tied to pirates the area is but the tower is very cool to climb and the they was great! All the way through the tour the guides were very knowledgeable about the buildings and their. History. They have a pool there that you can use if you want to.
  • Best attraction in the island! $10 per adult and children free! They even have free wifi. The property has several houses and you will need to walk a lot of stairs, but if you're not going back up, all you need to do is let gravity do the work (we had a rental car we needed to go back to, so I felt the anger of the "99 steps"🙂). The view at the top of the tower is beautiful and a must-see (see pic attached). Even though it is a self-guided tour, each stop included a friendly employee that explained part of the history of what we were seeing. There's the tower, a few houses, and three pools you can even use! There's also some gardens and a statue of the "Three Queens of the Virgin Islands" (you'll need to visit to know the full story!) Definitely got our money's worth and would go every time I'd go back again!
  • Do the self guided tour, to see and hear about the castle and the lord's house. Guides at each stop are very knowledgeable and friendly. Very good view aswell. To get to this, can get to do the "99 steps" along the way.
  • The views are pretty good but for better head up for lunch at Mafolie's or to the lookout at Drakes Seat. The pirate information is good but it's misplaced as the watchtower has no historical evidence relating to Blackbeard. Walking up 99 steps is great and touring some of the period houses is worth your time. I wouldn't suggest avoiding this place but maybe make sure you've done everything else first.
  • My wife waited in the long line to pay so I waited outside. An employee was alarmed that I took a photograph before paying so I explained that my wife was in the line to pay. He was abrupt and still told me that it was not allowed. Pulled my wife out of the line and went back to Paradise point to enjoy the best Bushwacker drinks ever and a much better view. Enjoy my free picture .
