99 Steps, Charlotte Amalie

3.7
#2 of 15 in Historic Sites in St. Thomas
Ascend 99 Steps, the landmark step street of charming Charlotte Amalie. The street, which actually contains 103 steps, is just one of dozens that rise up the hill from the harbor area. Dating back to the 18th century, the steps were built with bricks used as ballast on the Danish merchant ships that visited the harbor. Enjoy the picturesque climb surrounded by flowering gardens; at the top, reap your rewards with a scenic view of the sea and harbor below. Set of stairs going up from Charlotte Amalie. Part of the self guided walking tour. Visit St. Peter and Pauls church and the Governer's house.  more »

We are very active so kind of liked walking up the hill and up the steps. Decent view and on the way to Blackbeard's castle (which is different than Bluebeards castle). Would not necessarily go out of...  more »

The view was really nice but the walk was kinda a let down because Blackbeards Tower at the top was closed. The hours for that place are really weird. You can also just drive up to the top which would...  more »

3.5 stars. Worth a small stop. A nice little walk. And actually, there are more than 99 steps, lol. There is NO PARKING near here. Walk on Kongens Gade to see Hotel 1829 and the Government House. At the top of the steps, there is Haagensen House and the Rum Pourium (hosted by Hotel 1829). Rum Pourium was open even though the front entrance of Hotel 1829 was still locked around 10:30 AM off season. Definitely worth a stop in for the free tasting.

Yes, great views, except Blackbeard's castle was never his,he did stop in Port once, busy aggressive jewelry shops on main Street.

Steps aren't too difficult. The view from the top was amazing. I did not do black beards castle but as other reviewers have suggested you can take a taxi to blackbeards castle and take the steps down.

There are 102 steps. You can climb up from downtown (follow the signs), or take a taxi to the Blackbeard Castle Inn and climb down. If you are with small kids, definitely do the latter.

Fun but small attraction, just so happened the 99 steps leads up to Blackbeard's Castle which is only open Tues. & Wed. and we were there on Mon. still worth the climb to see the view from the top and the old hotel.
