Smith's Reef, Turks and Caicos

4.5
Teeming with a rich and diverse population of sea life, the underwater sanctuary of Smith's Reef caters for all snorkeling abilities. Encounter the reef from the north, east, or west access points, with deeper water in the west to central zones boasting the most impressive reef. Across several coral heads, discover large shoals of colorful fish, majestic stingrays, stalk eyed lobsters, and everyone’s favourite--sea turtles, playing in and around the reef. The eastern side of the reef is most popular with beginners and children, due to its close proximity to the beach and its calm, shallower waters. • If you go to the end of Coconut Rd. there is a nice public parking area. Saw lots of turtles and eagle rays. Be sure and print a map of the reef before going so you know where the coral is.  more »
  • Hint: find the map near the channel by the marina. This shows the best parts of the reef, and give you an indication on where to go. Parts of the reef are very close to shore, others out a bit...  more »
  • We are divers so just a little let down with Smiths Reef. No public parking and then a hike to get in front of the bouy that marks the reef. Now you are in front of private homes that are not happy.....  more »

  • Beautiful reef if you know where to find it. There are no signs and indicators for where the reef is so you can be swimming for hours unless a local or someone who found it tells you where to go. Otherwise, amazing!!!
  • Short swim to beautiful reef for great snorkeling. One of the few free things to do and better than any of the snorkel trips we paid for.
  • Best snorkeling spot near shore. Need to swing 4 minutes only and you will see a lot of fish and corral. A must for all travelers in TCI. My 8 yo boy was able to swin and follow me for 45 min without any problem. Really safe and 2 parking spot on each side but the reef is in the middle
  • The snorkeling here is as good as any of the tour locations, but you do have to work at it a bit. There are east and west entrances with about 3000 ft between them. The popular spot is near the east entrance, but the best spots are about midway between the entrances. The entrance to the water is rocky for most of the way though there are a few places with breaks in the rocks that are easier to get through. It is well worth the walk to start in the middle of the reef. There are maps on the posted signs with the reefs and sea grass areas marked. Once you find the reefs they are well worth it. We saw a much wider variety of sea life here, especially further out in the water at the deeper locations.
  • The beach access sign is small and easy to miss, but there is a lot of parking once you pass it. Reef then is 300 meters/1000 feet down the shoreline. It is a FANTASTIC reef - only 20 feet from shore you can see more fish species than I could count. Seagrass sections have fewer but larger fish, while the reef sections have dozens of types of beautiful fish. Please do not touch, step on, or grab the corral, or it won't survive for future visitors.
