Historic Lighthouse Grand Turk, Cockburn Town

3.4
#5 of 9 in Things to do in Cockburn Town
Featuring one of the oldest cast iron lights in the Western Hemisphere, and standing as the only lighthouse on Gran Turk, Historic Lighthouse Grand Turk provides spectacular views from a historical landmark of the National Trust. Constructed in 1852 by British architect Alexander Gordon, the lighthouse for years alerted sailors approaching the coast of the perilous shallow reef. Nowadays, this 18 m (60 ft) white tower no longer operates, but has become the main historical landmark of the island, with a snack shop located in the old lightkeeper's house. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture panoramic views of the coast. We didn't go in - didn't seem worth paying for - was a little run down from the outside and the zipline did not look very sturdy  more »

Included in a visit to the island, way overpriced, useless, near an old abandoned Navy base. Not worth the trip.

Very nice the context in which it is inserted the lighthouse of Grand Turk: a fenced area behind the cliff with exploratory Park for children with donkey Wanderer. To see if you are programming a complete tour of GT.

Tip: Don't pay admission if you expect to see the inside of the lighthouse. Thankfully, we took a tourist tram to the area directly outside of the lighthouse ticket kiosk. The tram worker told all of us about the history of the lighthouse and that paying for admission doesn't allow you to go and see inside of the actual lighthouse, because the structure has been deemed unsafe. The area we were in was dirt road with several donkeys walking about. Definitely not the most scenic and picturesque around.

Not exactly what we were expecting.... but it's an old lighthouse with some scenic views. They ask $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children to get in the gate and you can't actually go in the lighthouse. The area around it is scenic but there's areas that are a lot prettier on the west beach, Pillory Beach area. Stop in if you have time but not a true scenic destination.
