At Cappadocia Cave Dwellings, explore the ancient underground settlements hewn into the soft rocky landscape once used by early Christians to hide from Roman persecutors. This chamber and tunnel complex features networks of living quarters, stables, storehouses, and places of worship. Some of the villages and towns have up to eight storeys concealed underground. See the well-preserved examples of Byzantine frescoes in cave chapels dug by Christian monks in the 7th century. Spend a night in one of the cave hotels in a nearby village to help get an appreciation for this type of residence. • A very enlightening experience. Be prepared to have to bend and stoop to get through some of the various tunnels between rooms, but it is very worthwhile.
