Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House), Selcuk

Ruin · Church
Thought to be the house of Mary, the mother of Jesus, until her death, the ancient ruins of Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House) is now a shrine for Catholics. Travelers on a pilgrimage often make the small stone house a stopping point. Inside the chapel is an altar beside a large statue of the Virgin Mary. As you look to your right you will see the smaller room where Mary is thought to have slept. Outside the shrine is a beautiful fountain, which many believe has spiritual healing powers. Before you go, it is traditional to leave a prayer in the "wishing wall." To visit Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House) and other attractions in Selcuk, use our Selcuk trip planner.

  • In our families, we learn things that will stay with us throughout our entire life. They’re where our values are formed, and, above all, they’re the place where we first discover love through our parents and our siblings, a reflection of God’s love. Loving and being loved makes us more human and helps us to recognize God’s love. Jesus revealed this path to us. Let us live this love in our families, joining together in prayer.
  • Very solemn place. Great location to reflect. Taxi from town including 45 minutes waiting costs 140 Turkish Lira (return/2 way). It's only 15 minutes drive from town. Best to go very early in the morning. We arrived around 8.30 and only few visitors around.
  • A good spiritual place. Very high above the mountain. Children carrier friendly. 10 lira for car and 10 lira per adult inside the car. A good place to visit.
  • Satisfy place for all religion. The house of virgin mary is old and a little bit small. Don’t be in big expectation but very meaningful place...
  • Peaceful site. No pictures allowed inside the actual structure but there is a gift and coffee shop where you can buy souvenirs.
