Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House), Selcuk
(3.9/5 based on 1,900+ reviews on the web)
Thought to be the house of Mary, the mother of Jesus, until her death, the ancient ruins of Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House) is now a shrine for Catholics. Travelers on a pilgrimage often make the small stone house a stopping point. Inside the chapel is an altar beside a large statue of the Virgin Mary. As you look to your right you will see the smaller room where Mary is thought to have slept. Outside the shrine is a beautiful fountain, which many believe has spiritual healing powers. Before you go, it is traditional to leave a prayer in the "wishing wall." • So lovely and peaceful place. Inside her house is spiritually loaded. The Catholics keep the place but for Abrahamic religions it is the same Mary or Maryam we know. I was reminded to be thankful for ...  more »
  • It is a beautiful little place, where you can feel the peace settled all around! Take some paper and pen if you'd like to leave a prayer on the wall right in front of Her house .. truly a holy place!

  • Good place to visit if you are religious. Otherwise it's a very small room with a statue of Mary with no arms. No pictures are allowed inside. Only the foundation was left, the rest was built up by archeologists.
  • In1961 Pope John XXIII made known that ceremonies could be performed in the House of the Virgin Mary discussions about the place were subdued and the number of visitors gradually increased. The house was declared a place of pilgrimage. In 1967 Pope Paul VI and in 1979 Pope John Paul II visited. Nov. 29, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass at the House of the Virgin Mary in Ephesus.
  • A very nice place. Peaceful. There is a wall where you can write a wish on paper, put it on the wall.... And the wish will come true. Also there are some magical Springs... You can drink magical water.
  • Very good place. Peaceful and feeling impressive. Come and visit here :))
  • Lovely place to visit, They say that St. John under the cross brought Mary here with him after the death of Jesus. Very small, when I visited they would not let you take photos inside. There is a long wall were pilgrims tie pieces of white cloth to receive graces.
