Isa Bey Mosque, Selcuk

4.3
The İsabey Mosque, constructed in 1374–75, is one of the oldest and most impressive works of architectural art remaining from the Anatolian beyliks. The mosque is situated on the outskirts of the Ayasluğ Hills at Selçuk, İzmir.HistoryIt was built by the architect, 'Ali b. Mushaimish Dımışklıoğlu, in honor of the Aydinid İsa Bey. The plans for the mosque are based on the Great Mosque of Damascus. The mosque has two main entrances, to the east and to the west and contains a fountain court. The western wall has inscriptions and geometric shapes engraved. These walls are covered with marble, whereas the façades on the remaining sides are made of cut stone. It is built asymmetrically on a 48by base. The rims of its domes, with diameters of 9.4m and 8.1m, are decorated with İznik (Nicaea) tiles. Twelve round columns stand inside its courtyard encircled with porches. Its brick minaret is built on an octagonal base, and the upper part from the balcony is ruined. The mosque had another minaret on the west, which is totally destroyed now. The mihrab (niche or altar) was moved to another mosque, due to a door opened there. There is an octagonal Seljuk türbe made of stone and bricks, with a pyramid shaped roof, right next to the mosque.

  • A big party of the metropolis, Istanbul or feel that no other party with us. Only a few of the local people as well as a calm and secluded location. Now if you look at the Cathedral with the U.S. and John stuck good. There is no special mind to afford that.

  • Isa Bey Mosque is one of the most important works of the Turkish Aydin Emirate (Aydinogullari) who ruled in western Anatolia from 1308 to 1426. It was built in 1374 (776 A.H.) by Aydinoglu Isa Bey (1360-1390) in his administrative capital of Selçuk, near Ephesus. It is the second example of the twin-minaret mosques in Anatolia from the pre-Ottoman principalities period and is larger than many of the mosques of the time. Its architect was Ali bin Mushimish, from Damascus. The mosque was repaired in 1934 and restored later in the second half of twentieth century.
  • Beautiful structure with a rich history. Only a short walk from Basilica of St. John. You can also visit the interior of the mosque. For women they provide head scarf and body cover.
  • This place is a combination of many architecture from ancient Greece to catic and mixed of stone and brick It was once a temple then church and now used as a mosque.
  • Great place historically. Interesting architecture with materials used from other parts of the city not being used.
  • A very good example of how history works. The materials for the mosque were recycled from the old city. Unique and worth a look at.
