Mevlana Museum, Konya

4.5
Mevlana Museum features a green mausoleum and the original lodge of the 13th-century mystic Sufi Muslim order, the whirling dervishes. The museum houses musical instruments, conical caps, and robes belonging to Mevlana, the founder of the sect. You'll also find illuminated Korans, a 9th-century gazelle-skin Christian manuscript, and a valuable silk prayer rug bearing a picture of the Kaaba. The interior of the mausoleum is ornamented with Islamic script and enameled reliefs. Behind a 16th-century silver gate, look for the tomb of Mevlana covered in velvet cloth embroidered with gold. Ethnographical exhibits in the dervish cells illustrate their daily lives. Be aware that the complex can get very crowded, since it is still a place of pilgrimage. • Really Beautiful and peaceful place. I really love the beautiful tone played in Museum. I travelled there for one day but lived there for 3 days. Really wish to visit again.
  • Amazing place. Kept very clean and guards everywhere to keep people in line. Shops around the mosque are great as well. Although there was a guy with a gun tucked into his pants behind him. I wasn't sure of the gun laws here and he didn't seem to be doing anything suspicious so i didn't say anything but i am wondering why he would need to carry it and be so careless about its positioning and concealment. It made me and my group very uncomfortable to the point we felt the need to leave as soon as possible without seeing everything.
  • Awsum....mystic sama....best thing is its free n u can enjoy to ur soul....
  • Very clean. Well managed by local authorities. Good small shops nearby for tourists. The place s always busy with people from all around the world!
  • Very nice and peaceful place. Some people might not like it if they are party animal type of people. Definitely recommend it for spirituality experience.

Where to stay in Konya

The religious and conservative city of Konya can accommodate all walks of life. You'll find a handful of hostels and guesthouses for the budget-conscious traveler, all within the city core and at walking distance from the city's biggest attraction, the mausoleum. If you want something a bit more upscale, look to the four- and five-star hotels, which are also within close proximity to the attractions. Because of the focus on the religious site, inns and restaurants rarely serve alcohol here. If this presents a problem, look for the few international chain hotels which are more geared toward the foreign traveler--these tend to feature a full bar offering.
