Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower), Izmir

4.3
#2 of 140 in Things to do in Izmir
View the Ottoman-style tower that has come to represent the city at Saat Kulesi (Clock Tower). Built in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamid II's reign, the 25 m (85 ft) high tower was then gifted to the city by the German Emperor, Wilhelm II. Notice the Moorish themes of the iron-and-lead structure, and the four fountains that are aligned around the base. The town's prominent landmark rises from one of the main pedestrian spaces, Konak Square, so check out the surrounding shops or stop to feed the pigeons here. • This historic clock tower is located in the Konak Square in the city centre of Izmir and was designed by the Levantine French architect Raymond Charles Père, and built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Abdülhamid II (1876–1909). The clock itself was a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II (1888–1918) and is decorated in an elaborate Ottoman style
