Zeyrek Mosque, Istanbul

3.3
#73 of 141 in Historic Sites in Istanbul
Religious Site Historic Site
Tour Zeyrek Mosque to see one of the only Byzantine churches to survive Ottoman conquest. As with other Turkish religious sites like the famous Hagia Sofia, this mosque has undergone many changes over the centuries as different empires reigned the capitol. Empress Eirene Komnena originally built a monastery here in the 1100s and dedicated the structure to Christ Pantokrator. During the Ottoman Empire after the fall of Constantinople, the church and adjacent buildings were converted into a school and, later, a mosque. Today you can visit this site in Istanbul's Fatih district for a glimpse into past empires, which are evident in the architecture that has survived several centuries. Plan your visit to Zeyrek Mosque and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Istanbul vacation trip planner.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.

  • It was good to see that the restoration of the main prayer hall of the mosque is completed and we were able to go inside. A very good job has been done and the artwork and masonry are very neat. The timberwork involved with establishing stairs and the Sultan's Viewing Area was nicely made. It was a Tuesday morning and plenty of children were busy learning about the Koran. Ongoing restoration work is happening on other rooms adjacent to this prayer hall and nearby.
