Zeyrek Mosque, Istanbul

4.3
Tour Zeyrek Mosque to see one of the only Byzantine churches to survive Ottoman conquest. As with other Turkish religious sites like the famous Hagia Sofia, this mosque has undergone many changes over the centuries as different empires reigned the capitol. Empress Eirene Komnena originally built a monastery here in the 1100s and dedicated the structure to Christ Pantokrator. During the Ottoman Empire after the fall of Constantinople, the church and adjacent buildings were converted into a school and, later, a mosque. Today you can visit this site in Istanbul's Fatih district for a glimpse into past empires, which are evident in the architecture that has survived several centuries. • DescriptionZeyrek Mosque or Monastery of the Pantocrator, is a significant mosque in Istanbul, made of two former Eastern Orthodox churches and a chapel.
  • Marvelous place, well attended and deeply peaceful
  • Byzantine architecture. A most spiritual mosque.
  • An amazing place to visit and an incredible historical site. The restoration is magnificent and there are secrets and twinkles to be found for the discerning and curious visitor....!
  • This is the second largest religious Byzantine building in Istanbul, after Hagia Sophia. It's built in 1118 originally with the name of Monastery of Pantocrator. Ottomans then converted it into a mosque, adding a minaret and designing the interior again. Since then, it's called Molla Zeyrek Mosque. I visited it in the evening and it was definitely very impressive. The building's architecture is mostly intact and well-preserved. The interior of the mosque has an amazing atmosphere, every detail is beautiful.
