Vefa Kilise Camii, Istanbul

4.0
Church-Mosque of Vefa is a former Eastern Orthodox church converted into a mosque by the Ottomans in Istanbul. The church was possibly dedicated to Hagios Theodoros, but this dedication is far from certain. The complex represents one of the most important examples of Comnenian and Palaiologan architecture of Constantinople.LocationThe building lies in Istanbul, in the district of Fatih, in the neighborhood of Vefa. It is situated less than one kilometer to the northwest of the other great Byzantine building in Vefa (the mosque of Kalenderhane), and a few hundred meters south of the Süleymaniye Mosque.HistoryThe origin of the building, which lies on the southern slope of the third hill of Constantinople, is not certain. The dedication to S. Theodore is based upon the identification of the surroundings with the Byzantine neighborhood of ta Karbounaria (the coal market), but this is not sure. On the site, rests of buildings of the 5th century have been found. Judging by its masonry, it was erected in the 10th or the 11th centuries. The dedication to Hagios Theodoros is also far from certain. In the first half of the 14th century a parekklesion was built along the church. During the Latin domination of Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade the edifice was used as a Roman Catholic church. • This is the third mosque used-to-be-Byzantium-church I visited which is closed for renovation in December 2019. The other two are Fethiye Camii and Eski Imaret. Camii.  more »

  • Lovely little mosque. Unique architecture. If you are in the area i would recommend visiting it. Lots of street cats around as well. So sweet.
  • This is an update to a comment I wrote in May 2017. I was in Istanbul last week (December 2018) and saw that the mosque is finally undergoing restoration. The sign says the work should be finished in November 2019. Yay!
  • It is in a pretty bad place, around it there is slum. The mosque is in bad condition, it is closed, there is a fence around it and a second roof above. But it doesn't seem like there are restoration works.
  • I don't understand all the five-star ratings from people who never set foot inside the mosque - which seems to be pretty much everyone here, considering their comments. I made the detour to see the outside of the former Byzantine church. However, as is the case of all Byzantine churches, the outside is never anything much to look at. I tried peering in through the windows but all I saw suggested a long-standing state of neglect. A sign outside seems to contain the word "restauration" - I hope it's in reference to this mosque.
  • This dilapidated Byzantine church could potentially be a significant attraction, but as it is it looks ready to give up the ghost fairly soon. It appears not to have been in use as a mosque for quite some time, so it's conversion into a museum site would also be no loss to the conquering faith. It's worth the slight detour to see it if you're in the area around the Suleimanyie, but given its rather sad exterior and it seemingly being permanently locked up and inaccessible, I'm not sure it warrants any great effort to anyone but a historian.
