The Ecumenical Patriarchate, Istanbul
(4.4/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
The spiritual heart of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, The Ecumenical Patriarchate occupies a relatively humble complex in one of Istanbul's oldest neighborhoods, packed with notable structures from both the Ottoman and Byzantine periods. The patriarchate's main feature is a church dedicated to St. George, an unassuming building with a 19th-century facade designed in the neoclassical style. Unimpressive on the outside but lavishly decorated on the inside, the church remains a major place of pilgrimage for Orthodox believers from around the world. Pay special attention to the iconostasis and look for boxes containing relics of St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian. Put The Ecumenical Patriarchate and other Istanbul attractions into our Istanbul trip itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Decided to get around and visit all the temples and churches of Istanbul-benefit time abound. Found on the map location and went to Taksim sq.. There is a direct bus-55t. Fener need to cross the road and ask about George-it's so much easier to navigate. The temple itself impressed me. such calm and soothe even condescended to me. Agrees that you cannot come here only for the sake of ... visited. As many faces of Saints ... only one column of the flagellation of Christ is worth to go and touch the history and relic. There are also relics of the Saints. Read ahead and go to this place ... you will not regret.
