The Ecumenical Patriarchate, Istanbul
(4.4/5 based on 300+ reviews on the web)
The spiritual heart of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, The Ecumenical Patriarchate occupies a relatively humble complex in one of Istanbul's oldest neighborhoods, packed with notable structures from both the Ottoman and Byzantine periods. The patriarchate's main feature is a church dedicated to St. George, an unassuming building with a 19th-century facade designed in the neoclassical style. Unimpressive on the outside but lavishly decorated on the inside, the church remains a major place of pilgrimage for Orthodox believers from around the world. Pay special attention to the iconostasis and look for boxes containing relics of St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian. Put The Ecumenical Patriarchate and other Istanbul attractions into our Istanbul trip itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Here you want to go. Strange here that made both the Church and the iconostasis, as in the Orthodox Church. Here in the right corner near the iconostasis is located part of the column to which Christ was tied during the flagellation-people come to venerate this place. Here ancient revered icons and relics of the Holy fathers of the Church-Gregory the theologian, John Chrysostom and St. Basil the great and Holy wives-Solomonidy-mother of the seven martyrs of the Maccabiah, miracle of St. great martyr Euphemia's Basilica (gift of Russia in 1904), Empress Halkidonskoj Theophany. The Holy throne of St. John Chrysostom is located to the right of the iconostasis. I was about five, was Saturday service-so strange serve, attendants stand around tables on both sides and sing ... beautifully. Open like with 9 to 17, but I don't know whether it's weekdays
