The Ecumenical Patriarchate, Istanbul

4.4
The spiritual heart of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, The Ecumenical Patriarchate occupies a relatively humble complex in one of Istanbul's oldest neighborhoods, packed with notable structures from both the Ottoman and Byzantine periods. The patriarchate's main feature is a church dedicated to St. George, an unassuming building with a 19th-century facade designed in the neoclassical style. Unimpressive on the outside but lavishly decorated on the inside, the church remains a major place of pilgrimage for Orthodox believers from around the world. Pay special attention to the iconostasis and look for boxes containing relics of St. John Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian. We are one of the lucky ones, because as soon as we arrived, the Patriarch came from Greece and met him just outside the courtyard of St. George and gave us the blessing of two eikonitses with the Ag. Paisio. The Patriarchate is something fantastic and the surrounding area, causing grief but leave facing in old Greek houses k schools that existed the first thing after the Ag wisdom should visit each Christian is medial.

Only sorrow caused by the visit to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. I speak of course about the destinations "Mahala" ..... Semnotis and devoutness dominate everywhere. The Lady certainly Gate remains closed.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
