Sogukcesme Sokak, Istanbul

4.7
#274 of 879 in Things to do in Istanbul
Brimming with colors and culture, the quaint cobbled street of Sogukcesme Sokak features rows of replicated Ottoman-style houses. The nine structures were introduced in the 1980s to replace the originals that once stood there for over two centuries. Don't let the lack of authenticity bother you: the street oozes charm, and the houses now serve as boutique heritage hotels. These accommodations remain true to the 19th-century style, decorated in period furniture and decor. Stroll along the entirely pedestrian lane, named for the fountain in the park at one end. Little boutiques lie tucked amid the historical houses, selling handpainted ceramics, clothing, and hookahs. • At one end of most of the repair work, this gentleman of a cobblestone Street. She likes going to Gulhane Park down here from the Topkapi Palace entrance, leading to the archaeological museum. I other RTE has a café and a souvenir shop are home but is it rather creates quiet atmosphere here.

Where to stay in Istanbul

The bustling downtown core of old Istanbul is the popular choice among tourists wanting a short walking distance to the city's biggest attractions. Here you'll find hostel-style accommodations and reasonably priced and traditionally decorated hotels, as well as bed and breakfasts and inns with views overlooking the sea. Though often the most affordable, accommodations in the old city can be very overrun with tourists and street solicitors. If you seek a more relaxed stay, consider lodging near Taksim Square. This new, trendy neighborhood is a short 15-20 minute ride from the old city, but puts you closer to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Though the newer area of the city is a bit more upscale, you'll also find moderately priced hotels and some hostels. Look for luxury hotels in the western suburbs close to the airport, overlooking the banks of Bosphorus.
