Saint Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Istanbul

4.3
The strikingly white, ornate facade of Saint Stephen Bulgarian Orthodox Church belies its revolutionary cast iron construction. This three-domed, cross-shaped basilica's unique engineering was far advanced back in 1871; the cast iron pieces arrived on barges, shipped along Danube to the Black Sea. Inside, the screen, balcony, and columns are also of cast iron, lit up by natural sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows. The church remains active, but you'll need a caretaker's help to explore outside of mass times. Ask Inspirock to suggest an itinerary and make planning a trip to Istanbul fast, fun, and easy.

  • Very majestic Bulgarian Church Made from iron! There is a very large pomegranate outside to ponder all things spiritual, definitely drop in here it’s worth a visit in Balat
  • Very beautiful church - definitely worth a visit! It is all steel construction, the colors and the ornaments are not typical at all - it has touches from both Orthodox and Catholic cultures and also something extra... Really beautiful piece of architecture in such history and culture rich city!
  • This Cristian church is used for the mass only for Christmas, Easter and Saint Stefan.. In the others time is used as museum.. So magical, really worth to see!!
  • Not very big and you can probably see the whole thing in 20 min but worth a visit. You can go upstairs and have a bird's eye view of the first floor. There is also a basement with pictures and history of the church.
  • An amazing place of Bulgarian and Istanbul history but I am horrified by the fact that Google maps has the name of this Church in Greek! This is an offence to all Bulgarians and to the church itself. This Church is Bulgarian and has always been such! If anything the name should be in Bulgarian! I have suggested an edit in English, in addition to its Turkish name!
