The Istanbul Naval Museum is a national naval museum, located at Beşiktaş district of Istanbul in Turkey. It was established in 1897 by the Ottoman Minister of Navy Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha.
The museum contains an important collection of military artifacts pertaining to the Ottoman Navy. In the field of maritime, it is Turkey's largest museum, with a great variety of collections. Around 20,000 pieces are present in its collection. Being connected to the Turkish Navy-Command in Turkey, it is also the country's first military museum.
A new exhibition building was constructed. The construction lasted five years, and the building was reopened on October 4, 2013. It has two storeys in addition a basement, all covering 20000m2.
The basement consists of diverse items like figureheads, ornaments of naval ships, ship models and pieces of the Byzantine chain used to block entrance of enemy ships into the Golden Horn. In the first and second floors, a great number of imperial and other caïques are exhibited.
Many exhibition items underwent special restoration and conservation works due to deformation of the raw materials caused by heat, light, humidity, atmospheric conditions, vandalism and other factors.
The museum is located on Hayrettin İskelesi Sokak in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, near the Beşiktaş ferry pier for Kadıköy line. The museum is open everyday from 9:00 to 17:00 hours but Mondays, New Year's Day and the first day of religious holidays.

  • Wonderful museum, the purpose built building allows great views of the boats. Fascinating collection of all things naval, astrolabe and sextants, uniforms, the story of the ottoman and Turkish navies, Ataturk yacht. And great tea in the cafe.
  • I think this is one of the oldest museums in Turkey not only Istanbul, it dates back to 1897. A fast building, I think 4 story with huge halls. They have original ships date back to 16, 17 and 18th centuries. They also have a great thing which many museum fail to do right; have a clear chronological order of areas and event. You need at around 3 hours to enjoy the visit of this place
  • I really enjoyed visiting this Museum. The naval history of this country is rich and they have a quite a lot of boats as examples out of the Ottoman Era. The details on these ships were amazing! You need at least 3 hours to visit the museum. Don't forget to visit their restaurant afterwards - their cheesecake is to die for!
  • Nice! And not at all crowded! Make sure to ask the guide working there questions -- it makes it all the more interesting.
  • Just beautiful maritime museum, lots of ship samples from 1500s. You will love it. Entry fee 10 lira. Has elevators to go to other floors if you don’t want to take the stairs or ramp based walks. Bathrooms on first floor. Great cafe at the entrance / exit area. It has inside and outside seating, with lots of seats. Nice clean, nice smiley servers. Gift shop is currently closed. You will enjoy the place, need an hour to walk around.
